Comprehensive recalling of 2.7 million Toyotas
The recall of cars comes scant weeks since Toyota issued a similar worldwide recall of over 7 million vehicles because of defective window switches. Models affected in that recall included some Camry and Corolla models, whilst the current recall covers 9 models. These include the second generation Toyota Prius.
With this recall notice, the number of recalls this year from the automobile manufacturer reaches over 10 million, which nearly equals the number of vehicles recalled in both 2009 and 2010. During that time Toyota suffered some great sales dips, and it's reputation suffered somewhat. However, the current recalls are only precautionary, unlike the former ones.
A spokesman for Toyota, Joichi Tachikawa, said the steering wheel problems came from a weak steering shaft. The connections to the gearbox from the extension shaft can warp when the steering wheel is "...frequently and forcefully turned to the full lock position while driving at a very slow speed... This may create an increased backlash and the splines may eventually wear out over time, which could result in loss of steering ability".
