Massive recall of Honda, Nissan, Toyota and Mazda models
The defective airbags were fitted in models manufactured between the years 2000 and 2004. The part, which was manufactured by Takata Corporation, a company specialising in automotive safety products, is thought to have a defect in the airbag inflator. If too much pressure is produced, a metal part of the airbag may possibly splinter, giving the risk of metal shards flying out as the bag deploys. There have currently been no injury reports stemming from this issue, but nonetheless the manufacturers are recalling all models to be sure.
This may not be a full list, but the following models are thought to be affected, all sold between 2000 and 2004:
Honda: CR-V, Jazz, Civic, Stream
Nissan: X-Trail, Patrol, Almera, Almera Tino, Terrano II, Navara
Toyota: Corolla, Yaris, Picnic, Camry
Mazda: Mazda6
Depending on where you purchased your vehicle from, your dealer may be contacting you to arrange the free repairs to any affected vehicle. If you are not contacted, you should still contact the manufacturer to make sure that your vehicle is safe.
Toyota are unfortunately no stranger to recalls. Late last year they recalled nearly 3 million vehicles because of an issue with steering wheels, and a bigger recall was made in 2009 and 2010 because of brake problems.
