How much does an Airstream cost in the UK?
Airstream trailers can be bought and bought for as little as 8,000, but some models sell for well over 20,000, with the extra 17,000 or so paying for more features than you might need. The following article will tell you about the basics of Airstream trailers and give you some tips on how to buy the best model for your needs.
What is an Airstream trailer? The Airstream name was given to the trailer designs of the founder, Robert J. And his wife, Audrey R. Palmer in the 1930s. Since then, the company has produced a range of different models of small camping trailers, ranging in size from 4m x 2m (13ft x 6ft) to 10m x 5m (33ft x 16ft).
They are popular as caravanning, camping or travelling trailers for recreational and holiday use because of their versatility, compactness and lightness, which make them easy tow by car. They are also known for their durability and longevity.
Where can I find an Airstream trailer? Although the Airstream name is most associated with America, they are produced and sold all over the world, including in the UK. You can find them in a variety of different types of shops or car dealerships.
With so many different models available, the price will vary according to many factors, including the age, make, colour, and even the accessories fitted. Prices start at around 10,000. The cheapest model will be a basic camping trailer, which would usually be sold without a bathroom, kitchen or fridge, but would be able to take up to eight people.
However, when you add all the extras to your trailer, you can end up spending thousands of pounds, depending on which model you buy. Generally, it's about 17,000 for an average-sized model with good features, such as a slide-out bedroom and full-size kitchen. The more luxurious models can cost up to 22,000, with each extra feature adding another 4,000.
There are different variations on the trailer design, such as the open and closed models, and there are a number of features to choose from.
Can you buy an Airstream in the UK?
This is a question asked by many on-line and in response to a recent post about an Airstream on the Where is it now? board on FB. I was surprised at the number of people who had never heard of, or could not even pronounce the word Airstream in their country and yet clearly knew what a camper van was! Some people have commented on the difficulty in finding them, however most have gone on to describe the wonderful places they have been. It seems obvious that in the UK people are more aware of the Airstream name than we are in North America.
For me this has led to thoughts as to whether it is possible to buy an Airstream in the UK and how much one might expect to pay for it if one is prepared to source a trailer from the US where available (I doubt that any are available in the UK that have been manufactured in the past 10 years.) We will assume that the buyer has no US residence and therefore must either live elsewhere in the UK or have the trailer shipped here. The first question is what type trailer should one buy? Airstream offers both a light range which would best for a 2 season year round use, and a heavy duty version which would better for a long distance caravanning or touring use. The former can be obtained from a number of independent companies as well as retailers like Homebase, Wickes etc. The latter can only be purchased from those companies directly. When buying light weight I have heard that you have the choice of 3 axle options - 6.5 (American), 7.5 and 8.3L (UK). This is true up to and including the current range of Heavy Duty Airstreams, however they have also introduced what they call a Giant Eagle model. The Giant Eagle, whilst being a heavy duty model, is really only 6,500lbs and only has the smallest of wheels and spares. It is probably more a 5 or 6 seasons vehicle as it may not be appropriate for touring in the UK or Europe as we only really have one season here and it's generally windy (and wet) at this time of the year.
So assuming that one wants a heavy duty vehicle. What axle length should one choose?
