How many digits are in a RV VIN number?
If you saw my original question about the VIN digits, you'll know I'm still in the dark about the VIN number format, the exact number of digits used and the type of number used. This makes me a bit confused at what should be really easy questions.
The VIN number for my vehicle is a 7 digit number. Is the first digit 2, 5 or 7? The VIN does not necessarily have to start with a 2, 5, or 7. A VIN could start with any letter, except Z. Z stands for zero. Z is reserved to mean zero.
VIN's may also not use all 7 digits. The first 6 digits could be any number (any other letter except Z) and the last digit could be zero.
The first digit is one of A, B, C, D, E, F, G, H, I, J, K, L, M, N, O, P, Q, R, S, T, U, V, W, X, Y, Z. From: The first digit is the letter of the alphabet (I, J, K, L, M, N, O, P, Q, R, S, T, U, V, W, X, Y, Z), and as far as I know this is a convention only. The first digit is usually 2, 5 or 7, and those are the only ones that you will ever see, and the format is always (A)2 (B)5 (C)7, where (A) is the first digit, (B) is the next digit, and (C) is the last digit.
I don't have enough reputation to comment on @Lutz's answer so I'll answer for myself. If you look at the VIN, it may start with a Z to mean zero. That is in the example given for Pennsylvania above, so a VIN starting with Z would be a valid one. All others starting with letters (A-Y) are valid but not likely to occur.

I plan to use the unit as a vacation home and would like to know the status of the vehicle so that I do not purchase a vehicle that is illegally registered. Is there any way to check the VIN from a distance?
The reason I need to know is that I am looking to buy a new unit and found one on Craigs list but when I called the seller she said she didn't have the plate on the RV but that it was an older model that she had gotten in trade and when I asked her what year it was she said 1988 which I didn't believe. How do you value a motorhome?
What do you pay for a motorhome or a campervan? It's a question a motorhome buyer has to answer themselves. Some will tell me that in many cases buying a motorhome is like buying a brand new car. At least you have a new car that you like, but it does not need a value, a fair value for a good used camper or motorhome that might be for sale. Yes, they will cost money, but most motorhomes have been well maintained. If a dealer would give you a figure for their costs (ie maintenance, supplies, parts, taxes), that may help you calculate a value. The problem is that you may pay more than you expect to pay.
But we don't want a full blown vehicle inspection, or maybe even mechanical inspection if done at a dealer. We can do an online check over the Internet. But I know of several campers for sale that are worth substantially more than what the owner has paid for it. Maybe its a bit of both.
So how do we calculate a value for a motorhome? There are many factors to include. For example, did you buy a motorhome with any kind of warranty or other guarantee in place? Was the motorhome built from a spec list with an itemized and detailed list of the components that would be included? Or was it a build custom as your builder did? When the buyer buys a motorhome (or campervan) off the road market, the seller usually owns the trailer for a short while the buyer picks up the motorhome. There are several things to consider: How long will the trailer be owned by the vendor before the sale is closed? How familiar is the seller with the details of maintaining, servicing, and repairing a used motorhome or campervan? Are there any outstanding fees that should be paid before the sale can go through? How easy is the set-up, delivery, and unloading process for the motorhome or camper van? Then, the condition of the used motorhome. What kind of miles or kilometers does it have on it? Does it still have warranty issues (many times this applies to the interior of the campervan), and even the outside.
How many miles does it get per year? And this has bearing on insurance policies and any annual service policy on the unit.
