Is my Ford Focus Mk2 or Mk3?

My Ford Focus is in need of a service. It's very annoying to say the least, after many years of being driven with no problems, now I am having to spend hundreds of pounds on servicing and repairs. I am looking for information and advice on what may be going wrong with my car.

I would like to know if this is a re-stocked Mk2 car or a Mk3. There are many of our customers who own a Mk3 car, but this was a Mk2 and it is very difficult to diagnose as far as the parts are concerned (there are few if any parts that would help pinpoint the source of the problem). In looking for parts, one finds Mk2 but not Mk3 and vice versa.

I am aware that there has been a massive increase in the Mk2's sold but in actual fact many customers think they own a Mk3 which we do not stock as yet in the UK. A more useful part about your model is the engine. You can buy replacement parts for both engines as both have the OBDII code. Unfortunately it's easier to tell the age/build when looking at an engine and not a transmission. This will be covered later.

I hope my question wasn't too much to read, there are many posts on this site so I hope you are able to help me. If you do post pictures of your Mk2 this will be easier as it will make it quicker and easier to help you. This is just another test to help someone out who may need a different service!

My Focus is running fine. What is interesting is that since the last service, i've had to replace some tyres because of the tyres getting worn in the inside! This means I am now in need of a battery service it's been the same for 3-4 years (i drive it every day) and there are times where it doesn't start I get a message on the dash saying 'no fuel', there's no battery light and when I try and start it runs on low power and stalls.

What is a common fault on a Ford Focus?

Answers. ? I read an article that says this model has a problem with the electrical connection between the power control module and the starter motor. The article says to just keep changing out these plugs, which will fix the problem. My question is, is it common for a car to need this number of plugs changed? The car was still under warranty when this was done so I'm not sure whether it's normal for this many to be needed. Or is there any other reason for all these plugs to be changed out at once like a dead battery or something.

I have a 1999 Ford Focus Wagon which had a problem some three years ago and replaced two fuse-type fuses. The problem has not returned and there is no recall.

This year I have the same problem with the engine lights and the fuel gauge. The battery charge indicates 100% when running the engine and it does not turn on when the ignition switch is in the "off" position. Both symptoms suggest a poor connection/or short circuit but I also checked all fuses and there appears to be no evidence of a bad one.

I am planning on replacing both the starter motor and the starter solenoid, if that is indeed what the problem is. The problem does not appear to be a safety concern, other than to make the engine run more quietly. If anyone could confirm that is a safe procedure or not I would appreciate the feedback.

Is there any difference in the Ford or any model of engine? I have a 1995 Ford Thunderbird with exactly the same symptoms as described above. I have recently been looking at the 1998 and 1999 Ford Focus and they seem to fit your profile. They need more or less 4 plug changes before a year and 8 plug changes before the first 2026 mile break in before any problems occur. The wiring on the '98 and '99 are different but there are some commonality between the two. One thing that I thought to add on about the '98 Focus is that it had a couple of problems that could cause the battery charge indicator not to stay at 100%.
