Cuts in supermarket forecourt fuel prices
Asda announced it's price cut on the 7th November, lowering the price of it's petrol and diesel by 2 pence per litre. They were swiftly matched by competitors Tesco and Sainsbury's. The petrol trading director at Asda, Andy Peak, commented: "Today's move shows that we are once again leading the way in reducing the price at the pump... Unlike other retailers, our price cuts benefit everyone across the country..."
These reductions, according to Asda, could mean that drivers would be paying no more than 137.7 pence per litre for diesel, and 131.7 pence per litre for petrol. A spokesman for Tesco commented: "We are dropping the price of unleaded and diesel by up to 2p per litre from tomorrow morning."
The technical director of the RAC (Royal Automobile Club), David Bizley, commented: "The price that motorists pay on the forecourt is almost 60% tax, with a recent study showing that a record 81p from every litre of petrol sold now goes to the Treasury in fuel duty and VAT... What the British economy desperately needs is fairer-priced fuel on a long-term basis. As a supporter of (campaign group) FairFuelUK, we are lobbying the Government to reduce the amount of tax on petrol and diesel..."
On Monday it is suggested that a Commons vote on a proposed fuel duty rise of 3 pence per litre will try and postpone that rise until April 2013 instead of January 2013.
