Is Car Supermarket hiring now in the United Kingdom?

Now- a whole new way of shopping! It might be convenient for our shoppers but how many are happy with it? The Car supermarket has been a well recognised concept over the last 40 years since the first UK supermarkets started to appear. Now, many of us have the choice of choosing between multiple supermarkets in our area, each with their own unique products and services. Each outlet can offer up to 2024 products and over 400 parking bays, but there is now another type of outlet emerging: the 'Car supermarket'. What are these new 'superstores' like and is this the future of car retailing?

So, what makes them different? According to business news portal e27 (October 2012), shoppers will soon find car superstore parking at any location they can see. The sites will open early in the morning or late at night and the prices are likely to be significantly lower than any traditional station forecourt that offers up to 2024 vehicles to sell. The new style of Car superstore will offer low-cost parking with limited staff so drivers will need to be shopped by a car sales person who will have no access to any other information about a vehicle.

Supermarkets are always evolving. In the last few years, we have seen some well-known chains transform. For example, SuperValu, Tesco, Safeway, Woolworths, Kwik Save, etc The supermarkets have evolved over the years into modern concepts such as the 24 hour retail 'supermarket'; the hypermarkets such as Carrefour, Walmart, Home &grocery markets like Aldi and Waitrose, supermarkets like ASDA, Marks and Spencers, supermarkets offering groceries and even convenience stores like 7/11. This is now changing with the new car superstore format. So far only the SuperValue company has tried a retail concept of this style. With car sales being one of the largest sellers in SuperValue stores, this concept should be well received. If the business model works well then the same concept could be implemented in most supermarkets.

The rise of Car Supermarkets. Business news source, e27, (20 January 2013), reported on their website that an additional two new Car supermarket outlets were now expected to open their doors in 2024. This brings the total number of Car salespeople and Car stores to around 350.

Is it hard to get a job at Car Supermarket in the United Kingdom?

The pay is good, but the hours are insane. You are expected to work a minimum of 12 hours a day, and as many as 17 or 18 if you're lucky. The staff work up to 70 hours a week, but most people do not last more than a year or two.

It's a tough life, but it's one that has seen some of the world's top DJs and musicians come from. If you've got your eye on a career at Car Supermarket, you'd better be prepared for a very hard life and the most extreme working conditions in the entire UK high-street retail sector.

The Car Supermarket chain is owned by Walmart - the United States retail giant that has faced accusations of mistreating its own workers in the past. Its UK subsidiary employs about 4,000 people, including 500 full-time employees and 2,000 part-time workers.

Walmart UK has already been the subject of a campaign to unionise its workers, with a petition that has gathered 1,400 signatures being passed on to the business secretary Vince Cable. "We have been speaking to the management about this for some time, but they have been deliberately ignoring us," said Mike Smith, head of the retail division of the National Union of Mineworkers (NUM). "We are now seeking a workplace agreement with them and hope to begin talks in the next few weeks."

So who are these people working for? What sort of life can they expect? We spoke to some of the Car Supermarket employees who have spoken out about their working conditions, and who work in both the new and old stores. How the stores work. Every Car Supermarket is a small convenience store, selling household goods, food and other necessities. There are between 200 and 300 people working at each location - mostly young people, who are paid 6 an hour for their job, plus a 2 an hour minimum wage. It is a job that is, for many people, their first introduction to the world of retailing.

When we visited the store on the south London industrial estate, it was still being built. The workers were setting up a number of small shops inside, stocking them with food, drinks, toiletries, and newspapers.

The Car Supermarket is expected to open in late summer or early autumn.
