City workers spending a fortune on fuel
The average British car commuter is thought to spend £840 a year on fuel for their car, travelling 3,326 miles to and from their place of work. Scottish workers who commute by car are travelling the longest distances, at an average of 3,934 miles to and from work, whereas those living in the Yorkshire area are travelling the least distance, at an average of 2,561 miles.
The highest average spend on fuel for travelling to and from work is seen in the East of the UK, at £1,008 a year for the journey. The cheapest was again seen in the Yorkshire area, with almost half the highest spend, at £624 a year spent on fuel.
Workers in the West Midlands are the most likely to drive to their place of work, with 71% of employed people using their car to travel. Not surprisingly, the number of commuters travelling to work in London by car is at a far lower amount, at only 32%. This is because far higher numbers rely on the tube and other public transport.
CEO of Santander Cards, Alan Mathewson, commented: "Over the course of a year, car commuters could save a significant amount of money by making small changes to their routine... Nearly two thirds of workers travel to and from their place of work in a car, but they often don't realise how many miles they clock up doing so and how much money they spend on fuel alone."
