Which is the best heavy truck in the world?
Which is the best heavy truck in the world?
We may never know, but here are the Top 5 candidates. The last list was updated in October 2024.
I just got back from a trip to Detroit, Michigan, and visited one of my favorite dealerships on the planet: Mertz Ford. There I met with Jerry Fink who runs the new heavy-truck division at Mertz, and who happens to be also my brother-in-law. The answer: most definitely it can be, and I'm going to explain why in this list of Top 5 Heavy Trucks.
As always, if you find that what I say might offend you or that I've missed some key factors (and there are always a few), please leave your two cents worth in the comments section. (click each image for a larger view). The first step toward understanding the world's best heavy truck is to understand what those heavy trucks do. When I meet with customers, one of the first questions is, What will this do? and my answer is: Whatever you need. Sure, you could spend lots of money on a top-notch tow truck or a work truck that does everything. But the truck has to work for you.
I won't discuss how to buy a heavy truck because there's an entire class of expert web sites that do a much better job than I can. The first step is finding a dealer that can help you. Then, make sure they can deliver what you want.
Kenworth T800HD Dump Trucks Best Value. Last updated on October 4, 2024. Kenworth is the largest (and one of the oldest) manufacturers of heavy trucks and dump trucks. Over the past few years, Kenworth has been making two really good heavy-truck models that compete with the big guys.
The first is the T800HD, which looks a little like an extended version of the T880HD.
Which truck has the most horsepower?
You could make an argument for any truck in the Class 4-6 range, but the Chevrolet 454 is a legend and most likely still is the king of big-block power. As with any muscle car, it comes with the drawback of weight. Sure, you can add some speed to your rig by using a turbo or supercharger, but you lose some weight. This means you need to go bigger and beefier in order to gain more power. The 454 has a reputation for being relatively light, and most of them are equipped with a cast-iron engine block. Since 454s are more than 100 years old, these engines were built to last, and some have been around since they debuted.
We've decided to start our search for this mythical powerplant by evaluating the most iconic of them all. The '55 was the first Ford Fairlane-based vehicle, and it's arguably the oldest modern muscle car. It's still a legend to most drivers, and today you can find these gems at an unbelievable price point. The '55 got the ball rolling with a 426-cubic-inch V8 and had a good shot at becoming the "Holy Grail" of horsepower when it first hit the market. That said, these cars only make it into your budget if you're a serious muscle car guy.
Most people will agree that the '55 has a better engine than the '53-'54s, and the Ford engine is an industry leader today. However, Ford also used small-block Chevys for parts and assembly. These are called dual-purpose engines, and even the big Fords used them, especially during the 1950s. Dual-purpose engines were used by Ford, Chevy, Oldsmobile, and Plymouth to produce everything from low-performance versions of their trucks to monster V8s that were later used to power high-end muscle cars.
We found the first 5.0-liter dual-purpose V8, and it came from the '53 Chevy. It had the same size block, 4.375-inch bore spacing, and cast-iron main caps as the 426 V8 in the '55. Unlike the standard '55 V8, the 5.0-liter can be used with aluminum heads, which makes it lighter and increases the airflow. You can also put on larger pistons and more compression, allowing it to produce more than 650 hp at the crank.
What is the most powerful truck in South Africa?
A simple question. There's only one right answer, and there is only one truck that can live with it in a no-competition-in-the-world, show-down between the two. That's the DAF Super C.D2600 Super Zuiderwoude. It's the world's most powerful production truck, bar none.
The Super C.D2600 Super Zuiderwoude (Zuiderwoude meaning 'southern corner') and its 2.8 litre (2.6L/R), 5-cylinder turbo-diesel engine (the company says this means it has 'the best diesel engine', for sure) comes as standard from DAF's SuperCab chassis, with either a 1.7-litre or 1.8-litre turbo-petrol engine in the Freightliner SGL. But the real story lies behind the six-speed gearbox, the super-tough 6-speed transmission built by DAF called a 'truck-tronic'.
This new DAF transmission was developed together with TransSys from Germany, because DAF realised that it had to change gear patterns and shift timing in order to keep pace with the other makers and improve the efficiency of their diesel engines. The end result, a very well engineered six-speed gearbox capable of running for up to five years without repairs.
The gearset itself is one of the best DAF has ever produced, the six-speed transmission works extremely well in conjunction with the engine, and the best thing about all of this is, for once, the diesel engine is not the most powerful, or even in the top tier of contenders. The DAF Super C.D2600 Super Zuiderwoude has a 2.8 litre diesel engine, good for 200kW (267bhp), but the new super gearbox makes it the most powerful truck engine, bar none.
What is the most powerful truck in production?
As I have just completed the most successful rally drive ever and have reached 2,000 miles on the clock since the previous installment, I will give the answer for this question.
It's not a question of size, power, acceleration, etc. It's all about what you want. For me a truck is just a tool to get those big tires spinning. What do you want from your truck? A flat bed to haul cargo to remote areas and some kind of truck that's made to pull a 4 x 8 trailer. That is where the fun starts. The more money you spend, the more expensive it becomes. That's what it's all about!
I know this may seem contradictory as there are the small truck and family carrier trucks like the Ford F-150 and the Toyota Tundra but there is also the mid-size pickup trucks like the Dodge Ram and the GMC Sierra and then the full-size trucks like the F-250 and F-350. These full-size trucks have what the small and mid-size trucks don't have: room and space. When you need a tool that's big enough to pull a load of dirt you would not put in a small truck. For that job, a tractor trailer would be used and with one you would have the ability to haul just about anything you want; you'd have the space to haul a couple horses, a few sheep, three cars, a bus, an airplane, etc.
So what do you want out of a truck? Is it for work or play or just some hauling for fun? I hope I covered what some of you are thinking. The most powerful pickup is the Dodge Ram 1500 pickup, which makes 607 lb.-ft. Of torque at the lowest RPM range, and it can tow up to 15,000 pounds. However, it is heavier than the Chevy Silverado and Ford F-150, which has 577 lb.
The Toyota Tundra is the heaviest in the segment but makes the most torque, at 598 lb., at its highest RPMs.
The most powerful diesel is the Chevy Colorado, at 406 lb. of torque at 1,750-1,650 rpm, and it will tow up to 12,300 pounds.
