It's been asked before but I don't understand how the GMs are still allowing this to happen when the VE was designed. Why don't they make a statement or ask Tremec to release information? Do the 5-speed GMs run on the same type of oil as others? I would love to know all about these things - if only to protect the other engines that should be able to run them. I also do not buy into the "GM Tremec has been around forever" excuse. Some folks would like to play that "we've got tons of experience" card. So I will take what's offered. At least they will have tried to work it out for me. And if they have not done so, it's easy enough to try another. With two very well known Tremecs, you think they would have made it right at some point?

My engine is in excellent condition with only normal wear and tear. I use it 3-4 days a week in my wife's 1997 Suburban and I drive her around town in it about 2 to 3 times a week. I do have the 4WD transmission in the back of the truck, but rarely do I use it. I'm looking to save some cash so the next step is swapping in the newer engine in this truck since it should be pretty cheap as its in good condition.

If I do this swap, can I still use it on paved roads and will it handle the 4WD? I've noticed that Ford has been saying it runs out of room in my power window lever due to the larger Hemi engine being installed in the Suburban. I'm concerned if the rear wheel drives won't spin or even have problems since the engine is bigger and the whole system has to be adjusted accordingly for power transfer. All in all this has to be done next weekend since I just came home for spring break and want to start the truck and be on the road again without any headaches at all. Thanks!

I've owned a couple of T/C's with the 5.7 and a S&W 10mm when I first started. That was back in the early 90's. One was an '85 model in .357mag and the other was a '88 model in .44mag. Both were very accurate and easy to sight and shoot. I still have my '88 model in . I sold it last year and got my wife a S&W 629 when I got married. She wanted a semi-auto and I thought it would be a good choice. She loves it, so I just had to get her a 629.

The 5.7 worked fine for me, but I got the S&W instead. The S&W is probably the best gun for concealed carry and a personal defense round. The 5.7 would better for hunting.

I had one of these guns as a 12 year old, and for the most part I was happy with it. It was great for plinking and benchrest shooting. My dad kept it loaded at all times, so it was like a walking gun. It was also relatively accurate and fast, but it was fairly light in the hand.

I recently bought a S&W 17 HMR, which is my new dream gun, but my dad kept my old 5.7 hanging around, so I kept that for a while.

I didn't like the trigger on my new 17, so I went back to the 5.7 and I'm glad I did. I now have a much better trigger and it shoots like the day it came off the factory line. I love it for a range toy and for plinking. I use a 25g 1oz bullet and it's amazing how accurate it is.
