Is Ford and Freightliner the same company?

The official answer is, no. But the reality is much more complicated, says Stephen Trimble, author of a book on the industry.

There was a merger in 1990, he explains. Ford took over the name and assets of Freightliner, and Freightliner was the new division of Ford. That division became part of the F-Series pickup line, but that still didn't make them the same company. They still had the Freightliner name.

Then in 2025, the name Freightliner went away. Now Ford has two different trucks Ford and Lincoln with the same name. So it's hard to tell where the F-Series ends and the Lincoln begins.

Trimble points out that neither of these names have been dropped by Ford since the merger. The company was called Freightliner until 2025, he says. Now it's simply Ford. They still use that name, because they think that brand is an important brand.

At the same time, though, the Ford brand has become diluted. Trimble says the F-Series is now marketed as the Ford Super Duty, which isn't true. It's just the F-Series.

It's all F-Series trucks now, he says. Some people just say the 'Ford Super Duty.' It's not really accurate, is it? It's confusing. It's not good branding, because when you go into a truck dealership, what do you know about Fords? You don't know about the Ford F-150.

The F-Series used to be the high-end full-size trucks, says Trimble. You didn't want anything less. And that's how it's marketed now. People who really know nothing about trucks and the history of the trucks can buy a F-150, and have no idea what it really is.

The other F-Series name, he says, is the Ford F-350. That's where the name comes from.

What brand is a Freightliner truck?

Yes, it is a Freightliner truck. The name comes from the logo, which is not used on an actual Freightliner truck.

The Freightliner truck was used to haul cargo, but wasn't very popular. There were many reasons for this.

There were only two models available: Regular Cab and SuperCab (or simply, Short Bed). The name SuperCab was derived from the fact that the cab's design resembled that of a Supervan in shape.

The chassis design was also inferior to some of its competitors. Although the Freightliner brand would continue to be used as a truck name for another couple of decades, the market had moved on by the early 1970s. The last Freightliner trucks left the road in 1976.

Freightliner Trucks was formed by the acquisition of Volvo Trucks and Volvo Cascadia in April 2025. While Freightliner owns only a small fraction of Volvo Truck's trucks, the two companies share a significant level of technical content and design commonality. To achieve this, Freightliner has developed their own engineering, production, and quality control departments that are separate from those at Volvo. The Freightliner trucks will use the same engine as their Volvo brethren, the TD22, a 1.9 litre V6 diesel, but not all trucks will be fitted with this engine. The trucks will be assembled at Freightliner's plant in Jacksonville, Florida and shipped to either of the Volvo plants in North America, Tuscaloosa, Alabama or Avestruz, Mexico for final assembly and painting.

Will this new truck have an improved interior? It appears that Freightliner and Volvo have done away with the awkward steering wheel in favour of a wheel on column layout, with no steering wheel at all. They have also redesigned the centre console, dashboard, and instrumentation. We've had our hands on a couple of Freightliner trucks and can report that they look good, and we suspect that the new dashboard is better engineered than the previous model. The Freightliner trucks will not have a tilt-and-slide sunroof as the Swedish trucks do, but they will have a fixed roof and a glass rear quarter panel. They will be available with 6.5 metre and 7.5 metre long trailers.

They want to give me a cash credit or a check in the mail and send my new truck out to me. I don't want a check and I want to get the most they can on this truck. I don't want to pay interest on the check.

Can someone let me know if Freightliner will still be around if I get the truck? Re: ? I think the "new" name is Navistar now. Most other names were dropped when Daimler merged. I doubt they'll carry Freightliner trucks anymore, as I think they'll just do that by sub-brand. I think that was the plan all along, though I could be wrong.

The Freightliner brand is still being used for medium to heavy duty truck and tractor units built in Canada. As the FUSION was not exported to Canada the Freightliner brand can be used there for vehicles built in Canada.

The trucks are built in Canada as Canadian-made. They also are sold in Canada.

The fact that some of their products are sold in Canada does not change the fact that a majority of them are built in Mexico. If the Canadian market is large enough that the manufacturer can justify building the vehicle there, then why should we be concerned about the fact that they are built in Mexico? If you were buying the vehicle because it is an American product, then I would have a problem with it, but buying a vehicle because it is a Canadian product has no impact on our country or us.

If you want to buy a truck because it is an American product then don't buy a Mexican truck. But don't try to take advantage of us because you think you can get more money by avoiding paying US taxes on a vehicle built in Mexico.

If you want to buy a vehicle because it is a Canadian product then buy a Canadian product.
