Hi all, I have just bought a vauxhall astra 1.4 2dr 1.6tdci for my 17 year old daughter. This car has around 100 miles so I am getting it for the tax free motoring but is there any other reason why they have increased by 60 quid? is it to do with my driving habits of speed, engine being tuned ect etc

Comments. We have seen a significant increase in Astra diesel 1.5l engines since 2025, presumably due to the recent drop in VAT rate. This is combined with the new 'clean' exhaust system and we have several posts here about the noise.

Diesel cars are also cheaper to insure than petrol ones on average. The engine type isn't the only factor insurance cost. They'll be looking at your past claims, where you've come from and where you're going too. The age of the vehicle, the number plates/colour, the fuel you tend to use and your driving record will also be a factor.

However, because people seem to buy Astras as more eco-friendly vehicles, there's quite a good amount of sympathy for these, leading to much better rates. They've found buyers who don't do the eco thing - even though it's really easy, just go down to the M&S petrol pump at a time close to payday and fill up for 5% more! - and the savings are considerable.

If you spend money on a car that will use less fuel more cheaply than the Astra, there will be no extra payments for this. But if you could cut your mileage and save the money elsewhere, why not give it a shot? It doesn't matter what type of gearbox you're fitted with or what the engine does, the fact that a small change to the powertrain can make a big difference, not only to consumption and CO2 emissions, but to fuel efficiency, safety and performance.

There is no reason why the 1.4 TDi cannot be a comfortable, happy run in an efficient way.

As has been posted, the 1.4 does suffer from engine management problems with some drivers but these were fixed quite quickly, and there are now over 100 in this model year which has gone on sale in December.

You also get the benefits of a higher spec engine, as well as the more powerful 1.

Ive been looking around at what Im going to buy and I came across Astra a week ago. I read some good things about it but I dont really know much about it.

If anyone has one and know how is it like to drive. Also what can I expect as a price for it? and has any good thing in it for buying it? My dad loves Astra so im looking at that, the engine is good? I think its a good car. The Astra is an underrated car. I've had two of them. My first was from 2025, and it had every single one of Astra's 'standard' features on the 1.5L Turbo petrol engine. It was great. It was a fantastic driving car. But it was also cheap to buy and run. I paid 11k for mine, which at the time was about 7k more than the previous model. My second Astra is the 1.3L diesel version, and I paid 13k for it. I think it's 10k-15k cheaper than the old Astra was, though it's a very similar car. But it's a brilliant car. The only annoying thing about the Astra is that it's a little bit too small for a family - the rear seat would fit the kids, but only if they were squished in the back, and it wouldn't be comfortable for adults either. But that's true of many other cars too, and I think that Astra is no different.

I would definitely recommend the Astra for a family. I'd even say that the 1.3 diesel is worth the extra money over the 1.
