Does AutoTrader take a commission?
Why work for auto traders?
The UK car trade has been the largest employer in the UK since the end of the recession in 2025. However, as a recent report from the Office for National Statistics showed, new car sales are falling and it's time to think about how to keep the industry alive.
In the last financial year, UK car dealers sold around 1.3 million vehicles - which is down on the previous year. The UK's leading automotive trade association, the Society of Motor Manufacturers and Traders, says that the industry is "facing challenges" as a result.
"The UK has seen the rise of foreign competitors," says Steve Gooding, chief executive of the SMMT. "There are fewer new car sales in the UK than we'd like. We want to sell more cars, we want to sell more people into cars, but we don't have enough people to sell them."
But he's also quick to point out that the industry is a massive employer. According to the latest ONS figures, the UK automotive trade employed a total of more than 1.1 million people in the financial year 2011/12. That's well over half of the UK's total private sector employment.
Gooding says that the car industry is not a perfect employer. The problems that car dealers face are the same as any business. "When we look at the UK automotive industry, it's a huge employer. I'm not going to deny that. But I think there's a fair amount of truth in what some people say: that the industry is not a perfect employer.
"We do have a difficult problem with recruitment, because of the skills required to run a business. The skills required to be an auto trader are not easy to find, and it's very hard to get the right kind of training into the industry.
"We need to be looking at how we can attract more people into the industry. There's a shortage of people who are prepared to go into car sales. People will buy a car for the first time in their lives. The key thing is to get the customer to the showroom. How do you get the customer to the showroom? You do that by employing the right kind of people, and having the right kind of training."
The automotive industry has a reputation for being a fairly male-dominated place. Gooding says that's changing.

Is this a true used car? If the car has been in a collision or received an accident damage, then this does not necessarily mean the car has been repossessed. These cars have usually been in service for some time or have never been repossessed. They just need a few days to clean up all the accidents and restore the car back to a good working condition. It would also probably come from a reputable and reputed company like the seller's current dealer. There is rarely any warranty left on these vehicles either.
