Can I pay someone to pick up a car for me?
How do car delivery drivers get home?
By bike, of course
In New York City, you can't have a job without a car. That's how it's always been but it's not easy to get a job without a car, even if it's just in a small town. You have to move to a big city, or you're out of luck.
You might argue that a delivery driver should just take public transportation, and I'd answer, Yes, if your employer paid for the bus and train tickets, and put you up in a hotel if you're not making sales or deliveries. And I'm saying all this as someone who got his driver's license as a teenager, started delivering pizzas for a pizzeria, and now works at the same place as a delivery driver.
For the most part, that job is fairly consistent. Most weeks, I drive a few hours each way to deliver a couple dozen pizzas, then drive home and head to a gym to swim or ride my bike. (If I'm off on Mondays or Fridays, I cycle from work to my mom's house, and she drops me off at the gym.) There are some exceptions, but mostly it's pretty steady.
I can't use public transportation. My employer only pays for my company car, so there's no subway card or bus pass. Without a vehicle, public transportation is simply too expensive. Besides, I don't want to be sitting around while a train rolls through town.
And it's not because I'm lazy I live in a beautiful area, and I do a lot of riding with friends. But as far as anyone else is concerned, it's the only option I have for getting home. So I figure that I need to do my part to change that perception. After all, I live in a state where half the residents live in poverty and nearly half the residents don't own cars.
But I'm not the only one who thinks that way. Other bike-riding delivery drivers and their employers agree that carless commuting is a problem. And so they're trying to come up with some solutions.
Can I pay someone to pick up a car for me?
I was approached at a car dealership and told I had to pay to have my car picked up. This didn't sound right to me. I am not a wealthy business owner or wealthy person, but I'm fairly resourceful. I have had to pick up other people's cars before and I certainly wouldn't want a stranger who knows nothing about me taking charge of my car. So this is what happened next
Can I Pay Someone To Pick Up My Car? My car was a 2026 Lexus, an older model and so there were numerous reasons why the service wanted it removed. I have no plans of returning to that dealership (there are too many things wrong with it that makes it a bad choice to buy from them again). At that point the service advised that if I paid them for their time they would come and remove the car from my driveway and not charge me anything.
The process was so easy, I'm now wondering why I didn't consider paying to have someone else take care of it myself? Even though I'm very aware of how easy this could be done there are several risks I should have taken into account before I agreed. These include Not getting in my car to check that it was safe to drive after I had it removed and what I would have to go through to get back into my house. Loss of evidence which meant I would have no way to tell if there was anything wrong with my car. Theft of my spare keys off of my car during the whole process. There's still some old parts in my car that require a spare key to work and some of the work done is not cheap and may damage these key components. It may well be the result of getting it cleaned.
I now drive around in my car occasionally so I feel I should be able to afford to replace the parts. That alone is well worth the money.
In the end I had no reason not to do the deal. There was no risk to my person and once I found out how easy it was for me to get it taken care of, I now have no reason to ever find any reason not to make arrangements for my car to be picked up at some other time when I am able to arrange it.
