Why are Ford Focus so expensive to insure?

My insurance costs are rising, which makes me think I'm doing something wrong. I'm getting car insurance from a small company (with over 100 employees) and am not sure what to do. In the past, my insurance costs were on the low end of the market, now they are high.

Insurance companies make money by collecting premiums and passing them along to other people in the form of higher prices. The higher the premium, the higher the price. So insurance companies take every opportunity they can to raise your premium, and they do it by any number of tricks.

The trick that they most commonly use is one of volume: they pay attention to how many drivers on your policy are involved in an accident at the same time. Insurance companies pay a lot more for the premiums of drivers in multiple-car households than they do for single-car households.

There are three main reasons that insurance companies use this tactic. First, they are collecting money from as many drivers as possible, thus maximizing their profits. Third, they generally have to pay the injured party more when multiple drivers are involved.

While you can't control who is in your household, you can be smart about where you park your car. If you keep your car in your driveway, rather than on the street, you can lower your premium because there will be less chance of an accident.

We have had our original Focus since 2026. We just put a 4 cyl on it. It is on a 3.8 V6. We drive it very very hard. We've had the 4.6 and 4.6 L in it. The last one is about 5 or 6 years old now. I think it's about 250k miles now, but it has no mileage lights at all. We're having this one re-painted and the next one will be like new when we get it. We will drive it until about 2013-14ish when it will be 7-8 years old, and then sell it as a 2nd car to someone who just wants the basics (like a Civic or Accord) and will keep it for probably 2-3 years and then trade it in.

We really love this Focus but it is just taking a toll on the body. The hood creases are from a previous collision when the weather was colder, but they are getting worse now. The doors have cracks where the rear doors meet, and the rear quarter panels have creases where the front has. I'm not sure if the previous owner had an accident or if it is just the way it is from weathering.

The body looks great (except for the hood creases), the interior is fantastic, the drive is awesome and the cargo space is almost equal to the Mazda3. This car is a great choice for people who just want a well-built, fuel efficient, reliable and affordable, but fun to drive vehicle. The exterior is just getting beat up, so it's a good time to move it on.

Is the Ford Focus automatic gearbox any good?

I am looking at buying a Focus but I am not sure if the manual will be worth having when compared to an automatic. The manual will also be cheaper than an automatic.

I love the gearbox in my Focus and like that you have to push the clutch pedal before going into first or reverse. Does the Focus have a nice smooth gear change, and is it a pleasure to drive? I don't have a car but did have an automatic VW Polo which was horrible. It would creep forwards when you werent looking. It went into 1st with a bang, 1st gear would make it do a little back-up and I found myself in reverse without even touching the gear shift. That was about as nice as it got.

It looks like they are making an Automatic version of the Focus in Germany. I just heard about that too. I think they have released a manual one already though? Don't think they have the option to get one here (in the UK).

My father in law has a Focus and he thinks it's great. It's very easy to drive and quite fun as well.

He's a bit of a gearhead and it has a nice feeling to it - the gear changes are smooth and the car just flows from one gear to the next effortlessly. As for it being easy to drive, it's only as easy as you make it to be.

He's put in about 18k and still hasn't changed the spark plugs or cleaned his air filter (which he probably should do eventually). But he loves his car and has never looked back. I think the extra maintenance and repair costs in the long run is worth it though.

I have always struggled with manuals in fast cars. Maybe it's my old muscle memory kicking in, but the clutch and shifter feel awkward. The Focus is the same and I have yet to master it.

I had a Civic last year and I loved it. I was more in control and the clutch felt normal, no issues. I hated the shifting though. It's been a while since I had a manual and I don't know if I'll ever get used to the Focus's. It might be the most comfortable of all the cars I've owned.
