Who are the Fords of Winsford?
Curtis and Rachel Ford have had a meteoric rise in recent months which now finds them not only managing to compete on a national level with one of the premier football teams in the country, but they have risen above the expectations of their supporters. A season last heard of as yet another team who struggle to make the play-offs and the FA Cup was last night transformed into a story that will be told far and wide.
The Reds progressed to the semi-final of the FA Cup after knocking out Tottenham Hotspur, Manchester United and Hull City, eventually taking a giant leap when they won a replay on a controversial decision against Wigan Athletic, this brought Curtis and Rachel back to an atmosphere in the town which many remember as a by-word for misery. The win over Manchester City saw them climb out of the relegation zone to 16th place in League One.
However, their story is far from over. The pair are already dreaming big, aiming for promotion next season and beyond.
After their rise up the table in League One, the Fords have begun to dominate local headlines, in particular for the 'Ford Effect' where the pair have started to develop ties with the residents of Winsford. They attended an Easter service at St Mary Magdalene's Church, they visited the new Wirral Hospice and also took part in the launch of the new book: Wirral's Football Heroes which honours the namesakes of the region for their great deeds on the pitch. The pair were the first of a select group of players to be recognised and it seems they have impressed well. The pair received a number of presents after the publication of the book.
It is difficult to pinpoint exactly when their rise to stardom began. Some say it was when they beat Wigan Athletic. Others insist it was their first win over Leeds United or even further back when they beat Oldham Athletic in front of 10,000 fans. Whatever the cause, at no time have the pair ever been in their element on national television. Whether it was down to the size of the screen or the atmosphere in the studio, it can never be measured.
I just wish we could get a bit of that type of atmosphere in here, said a smiling Rachel during the television interview. We love coming home.
Can you test drive cars at Fords of Winsford?
The Fords of Winsford Motor Mart is run by Fords. This is a one-stop shop for new Ford models. Can I test drive the 2025 Lincoln Continental and the 2025 Ford Mondeo? It looks like the answer is no. Fords will not let you test-drive cars, but they will sell you a car if you buy one. (For more details, read my full news report). How much more can Fords sell before they get into trouble?
The Fords on Winsford high street. This is a really good reason for you to do a reverse Google search of the town of Fords in your area. What do local Fords sell that is different than a national Ford dealer? What are the best parts and service at your local Fords? And also visit their website and learn about the Fords of Winsford history and achievements.
Another way of dealing with this is to just tell the salesman that if they don't let me test-drive the car he shows me it won't sell - and if it doesn't sell it goes back to the showroom! Why won't Fords let me test drive a car? It seems that as more people take to the roads we all have increased expectations. So why is Fords of Winsford having problems now? Maybe it is because they have only been selling cars for a few years and they haven't made as many mistakes as other brands. Maybe it's because they have so many people to employ. But maybe most likely it's because Fords do not want to compete against BMW, Mercedes and Audi in a direct sales and marketing war.
So how can you beat the Fords? Well, firstly don't buy the cheapest model, the model where you get all the extras for free. You will soon find that if you take out the extras it has become a car that is barely worth more than a 5,000 car. Secondly, when you make the test drive be prepared to walk away from an offer of 7,000. Ask what the minimum price of sale is, if it is the lowest price you get anywhere. Most importantly never ask about 0% APR finance. These types offers are not legitimate. Fords will tell you that if you want cheap finance you have to work for it.
Who is the general manager of Fords of Winsford?

The job has no description, and there is no formal selection procedure. But it is fair to say that Alan Halladay was born to be the director of Fords of Winsford. He is the former director of Ford's British operations, and the man who launched the supermini-market in Britain.
Fords of Winsford started as a company selling Ford cars and vans with a range of models - including the Fiesta, the Escort and the Cortina - through a network of independent dealers. In 1992, the company set about building its own network of dealerships. It took a long time - three years - to complete that first phase. But the rewards were immediate. Within three years, the company had transformed itself from a dealer-based carmaker into a retail chain with its own franchise agreements with dealers, and a chain of over 100 stores in the UK.
One of the first things Alan Halladay did was to start recruiting people who knew about retailing. "The only people who could have been the directors of the company were those who had experience of retailing," he says. "I wanted a team that knew what they were doing, and I wanted people who didn't come from the company. They were recruited from universities and other organisations. And I wanted a director from outside Ford."
That director, Robert Pardue, was the first to come in from outside Ford, and after him came Tony Tapp, whose expertise was finance. The company was now a retail business selling and servicing cars, and it was time to make it look good. A year later, Alan Halladay went to Ford's sales and marketing director Ian Robertson, and said "Look, I know you're good, but I don't think you know what I do." Ian Robertson's job was to sell cars in Britain, and Alan Halladay's job was to manage the retail business. They decided the only way to be seen was to open a new location for Fords of Winsford on the outskirts of Birmingham. The store opened on December 17, 1996, and within three days it had sold 50% more cars than the nearest Ford dealer. Within five weeks, the store had sold over half a million cars. That might have been the beginning of a retail revolution, but Alan Halladay wasn't there.
