But you can't really compare the Mach-E to Tesla because the two cars are built by different companies with different business models. The Ford Mach-E is a full-size SUV built by Ford, which isn't designed to be a pure electric vehicle like the Model X P100D.

Instead, it uses a gas engine in addition to an electric motor, while the Model X P100D is designed to be an all-electric vehicle from the get go. The 2025 Ford Mustang Mach-E gets 500 miles of range on a single charge. Ford CEO Jim Hackett said the company is bringing a new class of cars to market that are more emotional than sexy. He said, it's a different car, a different business model and a different vision for us as a company.

Ford plans to sell a total of 25,000 units of the Mach-E in 2025, compared to the Tesla Model X P100D's current sales of only around 8,500 units. Ford's goal is to get the Mach-E into the hands of customers by the end of the year, and bring in even more orders next year. We want to have more than 10,000 units sold in 2025, said Hackett.

It will be offered in three trims: Premium, High Country, and Platinum. The Mach-E will be available in four colors: Blue, Black, Tungsten Gray, and High Country Green.

How far can a Mach-E go on a full charge?

Well, not far at all. I put it down to 11-and-a-half miles on a full charge, which is probably just short of half the total range of the Model S. The good news is that its battery only depletes if you really strain it, and there's plenty of battery charge left in the tank for more than a half mile of driving. The bad news is that unless you go off-roading or leave it parked on its roof, the range isn't anywhere near Tesla's official 19 miles on a single charge that comes with the longer option.

Range is something that gets quite a bit of play from people when it comes to electric cars. A lot of it is fairly pointless since it only applies to the charging method you're using and how fast you charge. Range has almost zero effect on actual travel.

The Model S has a range of 100 miles (depending on charge), has four large onboard batteries (with a combined capacity of 7.4kWh) and the ability to charge about 80 percent of that while driving. The problem is that the charging infrastructure hasn't caught up yet, so you really only see about half of the 100 miles in range. You don't get to use that range in places where there's no charging stations nearby, nor do you get the real benefit of using a smaller onboard battery that lasts for 30 or 40 miles - like a BMW i3 or even a Nissan Leaf - because that would mean giving up the added power and safety of the Tesla's giant battery. If you have your charging point at home, and use a charger at work and at home when you're traveling, it sounds great in theory, but that will come down to a cost-benefit analysis that I am sure some of you have already done.

However, for those looking for a plug-in car and not looking to pick a model with a longer range, you are in luck. The Tesla's range is pretty much the most common denominator across electric cars these days, and there are plenty of cars that fall within that benchmark.
