Is the Ford Tourneo a 7 seater?
Is Tourneo Connect a car or van?
You might be forgiven for thinking that when you open the door of a car or van on sale it's a vehicle designed to take you safely and comfortably on your own trip, or even around town. This is the assumption for which a vast majority of people who are buying first vehicles will already be prepared. For those who have used it before, however, it could well be something else. Tourneo Connect, as the latest model in Volvo's Connect family, offers connectivity between your smartphone and the Volvo's infotainment system so you're not relying on the map app to make sense of the road ahead. It's an easy sell.
First thoughts. Touting everything from a driverless concept vehicle down to a city bus, Volvo wants to push you to the limit. Is it selling what it can or is it really just advertising and pushing you to consider every new aspect of its car as an innovation rather than a simple sales tool? The company is offering more connectivity here than ever before.
The idea behind Tourneo Connect is clear. We all have smartphones and we're increasingly using the map feature to check things like sat navs. You can see where you've parked or where the nearest bus stop is. But with Tourneo Connect there's a new level of safety, for example, by getting directions from your smart phone, knowing your destination and finding out how much parking time there is ahead. With Connect you get to tell it that you're turning left, but then the car will turn right for you. Is that so bad?
In reality I don't feel safer driving as a result of receiving information from a smartphone instead of my existing sat nav. As a test with our Connected Car we turned into a small service station after leaving the office. My phone was turned off and I didn't want to waste time doing anything with it so I did what everybody does: put it in my bag for later. If the car had made a turn somewhere unexpected while I was gone I might very well have been less aware of where I was and been able to park more effectively. In fact, this seems to me to have been a better situation.
There is something positive about Tourneo Connect, and it's the way that Volvo has taken a step forward by actually integrating the data onto the sat nav itself.
Is Tourneo bigger than transit?
This question comes up a lot in debates about transit. I think the answer is no. Let me explain.
To understand why, we have to look at the world of cities and how they form. Let's say there are a few buildings. As buildings grow, they need more space. They also use that space in different ways. Buildings can be made of steel or glass. They can be offices, shops, libraries, condos, schools, hotels. But, how much space can a building take up?
This is where a transit system comes in. By collecting people and goods in the same place, a transit system can take up a lot more space than a single building could.
It turns out that, in Canada, the biggest system of public transit is the SkyTrain. It serves Vancouver and Calgary. It has 1,077 stations and over 880 km of track.
That's a lot of space. But, it's space that is used over and over again. Think of how often you use a SkyTrain. As it moves through a station, it takes up a lot of space. So, it's not a lot of space for one trip. But, because it's a transit system, it's a lot of space over and over again.
The SkyTrain also collects people and goods in one place. So, people don't have to go anywhere else to get to their destination. That means fewer trips and, when they do make a trip, they can get to their destination faster. That's a big part of why it's so popular.
Here's how it works. SkyTrain stations are built in a loop. At each station, passengers board a train. As it moves through the station, it takes up space. So, when the train leaves the station, it takes up a lot less space.
As the train moves through the station, people get on and off. That's when the space is used again.
That means SkyTrain can move a lot of people through a station in a short time. And, it's much more efficient than walking or taking a bus. People are willing to pay for that efficiency.
But, this is just the beginning of the story.
