I'm looking to buy a mid-level used MX-5. That's a nice car for sure, but the price is just so high and I'm a little worried about what kind of reliability they're going to be getting out of their cheap parts.

Should I find a cheap/reliable/low cost daily that I can easily get insurance for, or should I look to have all the bells and whistles? Is it safe to ignore reliability concerns and pay the big money if the car goes wrong? The dealership was also selling a 1 year old used '09 S3 hatchback from Germany which went for half of that, and the difference wasn't just low mileage vs age. They were just going through a "sell it now" phase, so the car had been owned a while with over 60k on it. But it also had very low miles.

That was a very reliable car which I think could have broken my back without much effort. But it also wasn't "fast". Compared to the S2 which I drove for three years (it was basically a base Civic with a spoiler and better wheels) it was like night and day. The S2 felt more nimble, was much smoother, better acceleration. It wasn't as much fun to drive though.

The question is will the new 2.0i deliver the same feeling when it takes off without sacrificing the price. I don't want a car that is an old lady that I have to constantly remind it to take medication.

The answer is probably no, but you will likely never know without trying. You might consider that the new 2024 F25 is even less reliable than the current 2.0i, and that the 2024 F25 has been recalled for front engine problems which require costly repairs. It's probably better to buy a used 2024 F-TYPE over a new 2024 F-TYPE, and cheaper, too.

I don't like SUVs. This isn't a new fact, and nor am I averse to the concept of one, as evidenced by my beloved Subaru Outback. The problem is that I don't own one.

I don't own a Ford Expedition, a Honda Ridgeline, or a Ram pickup; it's not that I despise them, but that I don't own them. The same goes for any number of other vehicles in the big-car family: the Buick Regal, the Mercedes-Benz C-Class, the Volvo V70, the Lexus RX 450h, the Nissan Murano, the Toyota Highlander, the Audi Q7, and the Jeep Wrangler. To be sure, some of these vehicles are quite nice, but they just don't appeal to me.

This doesn't mean that I think all SUVs are bad. To the contrary, SUVs have their place, and the Mazda MX-5 has a very good one. It's small, it's light, and its proportions are as appealing as any small SUV. It's small enough that it can go places that many other vehicles can't, and it's light enough that it won't weigh down your back seat. It may not be the most luxurious vehicle, but it's certainly no slouch.

And while I don't necessarily like SUVs, I do appreciate what they can do. After all, there are plenty of times when I simply don't want to go anywhere. For those times, I turn to an SUV, and the SUV does pretty much everything that I want. When I want to get into a vehicle and drive somewhere, I simply open the door, get in, and take off.

No, there aren't any seats in the back of my Outback, and I don't even have a back seat for the rear passengers. But I can easily get my seven-year-old into the front passenger seat, buckle him in, and get out. Once I've made my way out, I get in the driver's seat, turn the key, and drive away. My back seat stays empty, but my son gets to drive his first real car.

The MX-5 is certainly a very fun and agile car. It's also very inexpensive - there's a lot of value in it, even if you have to pay for the fun. But it's not the most practical car.
