It's the ultimate sports car: well-engineered, good on fuel, and looks great, as well as being able to be driven in comfort or pure speed. But there's one sportscar out there that seems to transcend all the rest: the Mazda MX-5. It's not for everyone, but it's certainly not for the faint-hearted.

I've owned five Mazdas and have driven over 10,000 miles in the last six years. The MX-5 may be a small thing, but it's not easy to put your finger on. With the introduction of the seventh generation model, it's become even more difficult to define exactly what makes it special. However, I think it's safe to say that it's no longer just a cute little thing, but it's matured and developed into a truly great all-round sports car.

It's easy to see why. The MX-5 has been on sale since 1963, and now that it's 20 years old, it's still selling well and the number one seller of its type in the world. So, what makes the MX-5 so special? Well, for starters, it's not a new model. It was already available when the new generation was introduced, and it's been an instant success. When the next MX-5 is released, it'll be ten years since the current model went on sale.

The styling of the new model is instantly recognisable. Its distinctive looks have developed with the model, and that's evident from a design perspective. It's the little details that make the MX-5 so much fun to drive. The headlights are more streamlined, the grille is more pronounced and the front end is more upright, which gives it a very modern look. The shape of the wheel arches and the character lines at the rear are a nod to the original model, but the tail lights are more functional than playful, as the side skirts are now set back from the rear wheels. This design doesn't look too bad, but it's not what I would describe as the most attractive model in the current range.

Interior. This is where the MX-5 is most impressive. It's not that the new model looks particularly good, but it does feature a completely new interior.

A mid-engined cult favorite of the past few years, the Mazda MX-5 Miata is now at or near the end of its first production run in North America. The current model isn't much different from the last generation. And because, well, it's not much different, the improvements you get from an MX-5 are very small but real. The body panels are stiffer, the chassis more robust, better brakes can be ordered, and so on. And even at this price, if you want to upgrade, the choices are limited. You get leather, but that's it.

What you do get is a roadster that's ready for anything but not without some drawbacks. The standard 1.8-liter naturally aspirated four-cylinder engine is good for 119 horsepower at 7,600 rpm, and 106 pound-feet of torque at 5,500 rpm. It will scurry the MX-5 through the hairpin turns of your local canyon at about 75 mph. But it does so in a way that's a bit too much like a race car.

We're not complaining no one said it was supposed to drive anything but a spirited ride. Still, when you're taking the MX-5 canyon cruise, the engine note sounds rather mechanical and grates like an old Vespa. The exhaust drone will follow you up canyon runs or long trips on the interstate, no matter how quiet you turn it.

That's partly because, aside from the new-generation automatic transmission we'll get into, Mazda doesn't make any changes to the engine and gearbox mounts. The result is a pretty severe noise signature for something this quiet.

Other small negatives include a lack of a backup camera and the nonoptional power windows.

I'm looking for a fun, affordable, high-mileage convertible. My primary goal is to cruise the back roads, but I'd be happy to get over the speed limit if that's the only thing standing in the way of my ideal Mazda. It doesn't have to be super low, though. I'm hoping to find something that's easy to own and drive, as I'd like to sell my 2024 Buick Lucerne when I graduate in a year or so. The Lucerne is no longer safe to drive, and I'm not eager to drop that kind of cash for a new vehicle that will sit in the garage collecting dust.

I also don't want to do an economy car just to get a decent gas mileage. I'm not going to be an environmentally conscious driver, but I don't want to be one who just drives to drive either. I want something that's fun to drive and fun to own.

I'm not against manual transmissions - they're great - but I'm also not against automatics. How is the automatic transmission on the 2001-2004 MX-5? It's been awhile since I've driven one, but I know that I loved them. Is there any special reason why I'd want to stick with a manual? Any advice you can offer would be greatly appreciated. Thanks! It has a 6-speed auto, so it will do whatever you want it to do, if you want to change gears every once in a while, or you can change it for the highway. But it's so much fun, I don't care what you do. You can get a manual that will do anywhere from about 25 to over 30mpg, in the right conditions. I like manual cars better than automatic cars. And, no matter how good an automatic is, the manual is still better in this case. It makes the car a lot more fun to drive. It's easier to modulate power with the shifter.

I'd go with a manual.
