The Ford Focus is the British market's most successful small car ever. Launched in 1998, the current model is the second generation, and has seen almost no changes since its debut. It's a compact five-door hatch that combines class-leading handling with a low running cost and great fuel economy.

The current range consists of the 'entry-level' 1.0 petrol and diesel, the 1.5 petrol and diesel and the 2.0 diesel and petrol, which are all available as both manual and automatic. However, there is only one trim level, and that's the 'Focus' which sits at the top of the range, being one of the best-equipped cars in this class, and offers both an independent suspension and a smart seven-speed manual gearbox.

Most new Ford Focus models are fitted with a 1.0l, 1.5l or 2.0l Petrol engine, depending on what's most suitable for your needs. We list them below, but you can also scroll to see specific spec information for each model.

The 1.0l Focus has a power output of 95bhp, which is the same as the previous Focus, and makes a maximum torque of 150Nm. The 1.5l version, on the other hand, makes 145Nm of torque. And the 2.0l has a bit more power and a more powerful 148bhp engine.

What's it like? When it comes to the 1.0l and 1.5l Focus, you'll find they're both very similar in terms of performance. They have good acceleration, making them fun to drive in the city, and the manual transmission doesn't feel overly heavy and responsive.0l petrol has a CVT (continuously variable transmission), which is a shame given how easy it is to use. You can manually shift the 1.5l Focus in certain gears, although with the 1.0l, you'll be able to do this for less efficiency.

The 2.0l, though, is a different story. This model has a 6-speed automatic transmission, which is a step up from the previous Focus.

If you go back to your first school car, a second hand Ford Focus will cost less than 100. That's 100, and it comes with low maintenance costs. The warranty will only cover a minimum period of 12 months, so a second hand Ford Focus is a cheap buy.

I say "buy" because it's a used vehicle, not a new one, but it's the same thing. If you want a better version, I think that you'll have to spend more, because a lot of people would be satisfied with a basic second hand Ford Focus.

I don't know if I've ever looked at the market prices for second hand Focus, but if we look at a second hand VW Golf, that costs 800 at most, and the average price is more like 650, which means that the Ford Focus would be cheaper. In fact, it's even cheaper in Spain, where the price is more affordable.

Then, I mean, the other brands are also cheaper. The Fiat 500 is 1300, while the Renault Twingo is 1100, so both of these brands are significantly more expensive than the Focus.

The real question is. Would it be worth it to buy it that way? The reason I ask is, that you will get an older V6, but in an auto version. The power windows are also an option in an auto version. It will have some rust issues, which isn't uncommon for a vehicle that has been sitting.

It's probably best to buy it from the dealer, but you will have to pay the freight and go through a bunch of paperwork. So, the question that I'm trying to answer is. Is the used one worth a lot less that the newer model or is it just not worth the trouble and hassle.

I'm just curious what people think. I'd stick with the V6 auto. I like the looks of the 2026 model better than the 2026. And with all the updates the 2026 had I doubt it would have made any big difference in the performance.
