Yearly road accidents cost the UK £34 billion
The figures, released recently by the Department for Transport (DfT), are estimates of the next yearly figure for the cost of road accidents. The cost in 2012 for such accidents is reported to be £15.12 billion, which is a lot less than the given estimates. However, the DfT state that this figure only includes the cost of damage to vehicles and property, and does not include the cost of unreported injuries.
The figure for 2012 could go up to as much as £34.3 billion after factoring in the costs of medical care, loss of working ability due to injuries, and of course the human cost of deaths, said the DfT.
Road accidents can devastate lives every year, and have ripple effects on both families and friends. The DfT has stated that their released reports are intended to highlight what a problem accidents on our roads can be.
Their latest report is an expansion of a report issued earlier on this year. In the earlier report, it was shown that the cost for road accidents in the UK in 2011 was actually £500 million more than in 2012.
