How much does a car cost per mile in the UK?

- a guide to motoring costs for car rental drivers

It's probably the most asked question by potential car rental customers, with prices varying from 1 a mile to over 20 per mile in some places. However, there's no "one size fits all" answer. Here, we've put together an easy-to-follow guide that shows you the cheapest and most expensive places to rent a car in the UK. A breakdown of costs for motoring in the UK. Prices will depend on where you travel, as well as when you go. To make things simple, we have split rental times down into six weekdays (Mon to Fri) and three weekends (Sat to Sun). When you travel it is almost certainly the cheapest time of the day to travel, and while you'll want to get a good deal, it's not always going to be when you're looking. So we have given the costs for the middle price, which will normally be the most common at any time of day. You can then work out where you can get a cheaper deal at different times of day.

We are only covering rental days, as most holidays are multi day trips so, in addition to daily rentals, we also look at weekly, fortnightly or yearly holidays. These prices do not include insurance or vehicle taxes.

Prices shown are based on a base of 50 per day (not including petrol) in September 2025. Price per mile in the UK's most popular regions. A few of the regions are more populated than others so have higher rental cost per mile averages. Others tend to have shorter rental periods so the daily rates rise, and other factors like average driving speeds or petrol prices have been taken into account.

Averages show the lowest and highest car rental per mile price you'd pay in each region (based on mid price, weekday prices and a maximum of 100 miles per day in all regions) so that you have a good idea what you can expect to pay. A note on mileage limits and distances shown - we have based all these averages off 100 miles a day, but rental firms will let you travel anywhere between 50 and 200 miles per day. You should always try to find out your limits when you book a vehicle.

How much does van transport cost per mile UK?

What is the cheapest way of transporting a van to UK? The cheapest way to travel to the UK is with an intermodal freight forwarder such as Europaway or OOCL. This is usually used to transport lorries and small vans, which are not suitable for the high-speed rail or aircraft options. These services offer competitive rates and they will make sure the transport reaches the final port safely. They also have the added advantage of being able to book the whole transport journey, including vehicle hiring, storage and delivery to your terminal.

To calculate the price of an international intermodal transport service, simply multiply the vehicle's GVWR by the number of days you wish to travel and then add any local storage costs (if applicable). Please note that most intermodal freight forwarding companies only quote their standard service, and you need to contact them for a customised service quote.

If your van is only carrying personal effects, it may be cheaper to hire a private jet to the UK than to buy your own transport to the UK. This is because private flights from most of Europe and the Middle East are competitive when booked in advance, especially for business travellers.

If your van is carrying cargo for commercial purposes, then public transport is often cheaper than air freight, especially if the van size is big enough to accommodate two trailers. In addition to being cheaper, transport by train is more flexible, which is why we have seen transport companies use trains to transport their cargo between the UK and France, Germany and Poland.

Finally, the shipping container is the cheapest option of all when transporting a van to UK. If you are only planning to travel one way then ship it, otherwise, to save on costs, you can ship the same container in both directions.

How much does van transport cost per day UK? Transporting a van from UK to other countries in Europe using an intermodal freight forwarder is much cheaper than other methods. However, it does come at a cost. In order to calculate the cost per day of an intermodal freight transport service, you need to multiply the GVWR of your vehicle by the number of days you plan to travel, as well as the cost of any additional storage.

Can I pay someone to pick up a car for me?

how much to transport a car uk Can I pay someone to pick up a car for me?

In the past I thought there was a limit to what the police would do to retrieve your car if its been written off? I know they are not able to search the car because it may contain trace evidence, but could they be paid to come, take photos and give a detailed report of what they have found? So the insurance company could then file a claim with their repairer to rectify said car. I know these type of requests have to be approved and all, so was this possible? Thanks. When we write off a vehicle the insurance company cannot look inside the car. However it can be worth getting a free vehicle recovery service, for example RAC can use their "recover my car" services, though you will need to wait and see how long it takes to recover your car. Alternatively an auto shop would provide a recovery service, though your mileage etc needs to be looked at.

I have had vehicles write-off in the past, both my own and other's and no, they could not go searching and they wouldn't want to risk any trace evidence being found in them. The person who did the write-off is contacted and he can make an estimate on the type of work required to sort things out as well asking for payment towards the work, plus fees. They also have to take photos and give them all over to the DVLIf I am reading the signs correctly (sorry, not an Auto Engineer) a 'no fix, no pay' policy applies. This means that an agent has to agree to pay a specified amount even if the car could potentially be repaired and then taken to the scrap yard. There is also the possibility of making the repair - either DIY or hire a professional and not be covered unless repair is completed.

How much to transport a car 300 miles in the UK privately?

I have a car that I would like to drive to a family wedding 300 miles away, but I do not wish to drive this myself. I would like to hire a driver for the 300 miles and they would be transporting the car. How much does this cost? How much would it cost if they were to drop me off at the destination and pick me up on the return journey? As far as I know, you can't hire someone to drive a vehicle for you. You will have to drive yourself.

If you're in the UK, the average fuel price is around 1 per mile - that's why we call them fuel prices. 300 miles is quite a long trip, so it will be quite expensive, because there will be at least 3 people in your car: You, the driver, and probably some luggage. If you plan to travel at a reasonable pace and arrive at the destination before dark, you'll probably spend about 15-20. If you stop every 2 hours and spend 2 hours in each stop, that will be 60, and if you stop every 1.5 hours and spend 4 hours in each stop, that will be 120.

If you want to travel faster than that, you'll probably have to get a taxi, which will be more expensive.
