In the United States, you are more likely to find a Ford than a Toyota truck in most parts of the country. But according to the US Government, at least, not all pickup trucks are created equal.

More than 35,000 claims, worth around 20 million in repairs, were paid out after accidents involving Toyotas. In a statement provided to The Manufacturer, Toyota said: The safety system of the Toyota Tacoma, Tundra and 4 Runner, designed to protect occupants, is standard. In order to reduce the possibility of side impact, a side impact air bag and side curtain air bags are available for these vehicles.

When was the truck built? Was it made in '87 or earlier? I would look into a replacement oil system, even if they were old - you are probably right that they can blow up at any time. I would not buy a truck without a warranty, even if it's older and in someone else's garage.

There are a lot of factors that could come into play.
