What is the gas mileage on a Ford Focus 1.0 EcoBoost ST-line?
Hi everyone! I just got my new car and I have a question! Is there anyone out there with a 1.0 Ecoboost ST-Line that could tell me what kind of gas mileage it gets? I'm very interested to know this before I get home from work. It's currently in the shop so I haven't been able to drive it yet. (A Ford dealer in Chicago)
Replies. I don't think you can get any exact figures yet. This is because the EPA still hasn't released the figures for the 1.0 Ecoboost/ST-Line version, nor the 1.6 Ecoboost/ST-Line version (or any other engine in the 1.0 to 1.6 Ecoboost range).
They're all at least a few months behind the ST and GT versions. When they finally come out (early fall), I think the 1.6 Ecoboost ST-Line will get between 20 and 25 MPG (city) and perhaps as much as 30 MPG (highway), which would make it one of the best gas mileage cars ever. And I'll be getting close to 40 MPG on the freeway.
Keep an eye on the car dealer though, as we may see some 1.6 Ecoboost/ST-Line pricing that rivals the current 1.6 Ecoboost ST, or even the 1.6 Ecoboost GT.
Ford, in its rush to market the next gen Focus, forgot that it has made several mistakes in the past. They released the first Focus when gas prices were rising and consumers were starting to demand more fuel efficient cars. They had the 1.6 Ecoboost but decided to scrap it in favor of the 1. The 1.6 Ecoboost was a wonderful car, but the 1.0 Ecoboost is a fine car, but it was rushed into the market in a time when gas prices were very high. Then they released the 1.6 Ecoboost in their new Focus in the summer.6 Ecoboost is a perfect choice for the times when gas prices are low and the economy is booming.

Is the Ford Focus 1.0 EcoBoost any good?
The best way to answer that question is probably with a video, because we tend to get carried away when it comes to automotive videos. But since YouTube has a time limit on them, we've put together our version here. We start with nothing to driveno engine noise, zero background, no exhaust or road surface interaction, and nothing but a still image from the video of this small little hot-hatch to use as a starting point. This means that the audio used in this video is pure music:
In our 1.0 version, we didn't add in the engine's background noise, so we have to make our own sounds for engine rpms. We used some recorded engine rpms that we found on the Engine Rpms section of my audio file archive.
To keep things honest, we've decided to record ourselves as if were newbies on the topic of audio editing, and we had just started tinkering with the software to get the audio in shape. The first thing we did was to reduce all of the audio waves (even though we wanted them to go completely flat), and then we created an equalization curve that made the entire track sound really brightwe used one that had a very wide range. Next, we took out all of the noise in the file, and added some back in, then we re-filtered the audio until it sounded like a nice, smooth car ride. It helps keep things realistic to not have any background noise in the video; we just tried to match what it would be like in a real situation.
All of the music in this video was taken from MP3, and it was mixed to match the volume of the original song. Finally, after having everything perfect, we also added in a few seconds at the end of the video to give us the option to do a final tweak of the mix.
We thought that was our version of quality editing, and we definitely think it's better than the auto manufacturers' attempts at editing videos, even if they may have more money and resources to work with. We've seen many Focus 1.0 EcoBoost videos over the years, most of which are fairly good, but none have gotten anything close to perfect like our version. So, are you ready to test drive the Focus 1.
Is the Ford Focus ST-line a good car?
You could ask three different people and get three different answers. The Focus ST certainly isn't a slouch, and it can handle nearly the same power as the new Golf GTI's turbocharged 1.8-liter motor. You also get the ST's rear-drive chassis that is tuned to feel right on the line. If you don't care too much about the drivetrain, that is.
But the problem with the ST isn't in the powertrain but in the chassis. It looks fine, because of the car's styling cues that are inspired by the latest Mustang. But the ST just doesn't feel right in the corners, and that's a real letdown. The Focus ST needs more aggressive steering, more aggressive damping, and even an upsize of the 18-inch wheels in order to make its handling more exciting. This car is not a sleeper.
But the driveability doesn't end there. Even with its 1.5-liter three-cylinder that's mated to a six-speed manual transmission, the Focus feels quick on the open road. The steering isn't too light or too heavy for how much grip it has, which lends well to passing. But when you hit the highway, I would not recommend using the steering-wheel-mounted paddle shifters because they only serve to throw you into overdrive and then into neutral. Better to shift yourself using the small shift lever up on the console.
The cabin doesn't help with the driving experience either. Even with its sports seats, the Focus just feels cheap and spartan. There's a hard plastic dashboard, and the door panels also look cheap. The radio buttons are made of plastic, too, and even with standard Ford SYNC, the interface leaves so much to be desired. No nav or Bluetooth, just plain old controls. The steering wheel only has one control button, and that's OK for a sports car that is not really supposed to have a lot of controls. In fact, I would rather have fewer controls, because the ones here are so basic. And the seats don't give any support whatsoever.
Also missing is a sunroof. This shouldn't be such a shame, because the ST doesn't feel like a track car even though it may be the most track-ready of all the Focus models.
