What time does the NFU helpline open?
The National Farmers Union has a call centre open from 8am to 5pm, 7 days a week. The helpline number is 01442 479 877 and you can talk to a NFU member on the phone about any problem that you may have. On Wednesday evenings and Sunday afternoons it is possible for the NFU helpline to ringback for landline numbers.
Who does it cover? The NFU is a member-owned organisation made up of over 45,000 farmers and landowners. Although all farmers and land managers will be helped, we focus our work in rural communities and agricultural businesses. Our services are open to anyone affected by the food and farming sectors and includes farmers, farm workers, landowners and other people working with or within food and farming.
Does it cover me if I live abroad? We don't operate an overseas help line. If you live in the UK, NFU members provide free support through their network, providing training, advice and access to markets, and helping to keep farmers informed about the latest policy initiatives, legislation, research and other information that is relevant to their interests. They also deal with queries from UK members if they think it is most appropriate.
What is the NFU Mutual Controversy?
The latest round of the National Farmers Union-Farmers Mutuals dispute is centred on whether Farmers Mutuals (FM) can provide farmers with guaranteed business continuity insurance, rather than a more conventional, non-guaranteed policy. FM, which owns over two-thirds of the UK's independent insurance brokers, have stated that they could provide the insurance but it would be at a price so high that no farmer would purchase it, claiming that they could only charge what their costs are at the moment. FM state that the premium they can charge is less than they spend on insurance. The NFU, however, believe Farmers Mutuals charge a premium that is astronomically high in comparison to their own costs. These have not been made public.
The NFU says that by April of next year, Farmers Mutuals will be insolvent, and all claims will be made in an unsecured way, with no guarantee for Farmers to make claims against their insurers. How do Farmers have protection? A farmers mutual policy offers coverage which is the equivalent of conventional insurance with guarantees, usually for a period of seven years, and provides cover for many risks including the risk of crop failure. There is also an option for a short term single year's cover which can be cancelled at any time.
Why do farmers need insurance? In order to make a profit from farming, we must work with the financial risk - the price paid for a commodity depends partly on how the weather turns out. As a business, we must take such risks into account because without taking action, we cannot hope to have a prosperous farm business. This is what makes farming such an interesting, exciting and unpredictable industry. We are never 'in' or 'out' of a good harvest or a bad one - there is always a possibility that things may go badly wrong. With insurance, as a business, we can accept that these risks are part of our job, and we can mitigate them. Without them, we cannot expect to survive.
In the past, Farmers Mutuals provided their own protection to farmers through underwriting their own businesses, but a mutual policy provides a more sophisticated approach. It has different features that allow for more efficient underwriting, and it has different features which help farmers manage risk.
