How many people use Craigslist?

What does Craigslist stand for?

Some believe its acronym is Commercial Laundry Services, or CLS; others believe that it stands for Clean Slate, to indicate that the ad will leave no trace. No matter how it's spelled, Craigslist can be an invaluable tool to consumers and businesses.

For consumers, Craigslist can often be the only way to find items that are on sale - and with the variety of classified ads found on this website, there is a broad range of things one can search for. For businesses, Craigslist is usually the first place to look if they want to reach customers.

Craigslist began in 1995 as craig's list, and has been around for 22 years. It was first conceived by Craig Newmark. In 1997, Craigslist added the term eBay as well. Both companies allow posting and listing items in many ways: Free Listing for free advertising, Post in the Marketplace for free advertising and List Sale for posting items for sale. Although people have been looking for and buying items online since the 90s, Craigslist grew to popularity more recently and has been around the longest.

How does Craigslist work? A customer signs up for a free account at Craigslist, and then lists their items using Free Listing. The price of listing something is free, but the consumer may decide to pay a fee for further advertising, or pay to remove the listing after the item sells. If the consumer chooses to pay to remove a listing, it is not automatically removed. Businesses that post their items on Craigslist usually pay for Premium Listing for paid advertising.

Listings appear on individual pages - but there are actually multiple websites and subdomains that make up Craigslist, such as New York, Florida, Seattle and Denver. Users can navigate to these different sites individually to check if new listings match their search criteria. If a listing is removed from a particular Craigslist section and it is not returned to any other parts of the website, it will eventually be removed from the overall listing.

In addition to paying to post an item, listings can also be purchased. The amount of money a seller wants for an item can be seen right next to it. This makes it easier to see if someone is willing to offer a decent price for a particular item.

What is the British Craigslist equivalent?

A website that I've heard of, but rarely seen or used. And yet if you take a peek at these photos on Flickr for example - you may find some intriguing posts or ads.

It seems that the British version is somewhat of a digital black hole, with no real site coverage and no public contact details - no contact us page (the one for Craigslist has been updated), no phone number and very little information available. It has been possible to find out where it is based, but you have to jump through hoops like a rabbit jumping through hollers - first searching for a website that mentions the word UK. This then leads you to a web page that you cannot access, and which redirects to another web site; and this then eventually leads to a Twitter account - a web of web links that seem to go nowhere. So basically your last alternative is to send a tweet to @CraigslistUK, or email them directly.

Craigslist UK is perhaps a step behind the American counterpart in terms of features, but they do have a few options of their own. In fact they are more advanced than the European equivalents. For example, when you post an ad in the UK there is no category search. The equivalent category search function is not available either. In other words, the ads are just sorted in Categories and the users have to search in each single category.

The Free Advertisements option will be the most obvious option to look for, as they are still advertised on every major billboard or other visible object in London or Scotland (from my experience - I went to Edinburgh for 3 days to try and find out this exact thing - well, I guess they advertise in Ireland too). You can also post classified advertisements that you want to reach certain cities, and have them published according to your set preferences. In short, this is the next best option if you don't want to pay.

And there is a third option: posting advertisements on the London-only classified advertising board for only Londoners only. The London adboards are similar to the California Craigslist pages, with no Free Ads section and instead you have to pay 5.00.

I have a small one-bedroom in San Francisco that has an open house today. I'm looking for a roommate, so I'll take anyone who is interested. It's right off the Tenderloin, so if you're into that, it's probably a good fit. No airbnb's at this time, but you can use AirBnb.

Anywho, if you are interested in this listing, please PM me or leave a comment. Thanks! Also, I found an awesome spot to live. You can rent out the guest room for extra money, or just live in the main room with me. It's in the Mission and right next to Dolores Park. It's a 1 bedroom, very clean, and very spacious. And the neighbors are super friendly and quiet. It's also in a great location for BART and TUHS.

The downside is it's a bit further out than I would prefer, but it's in a great location, and I'm sure it will be an awesome place to live. This is the email I got from Craigslist: SORRY. BUT THIS LISTING HAS BEEN PUT ON HOLD. IT WILL BE BACK UP AND WORKING IN THE FUTURE.

How many people use Craigslist?

This is a discussion on ? within the Tech Talk forums, part of the Community Boards category; I was wondering how many people use Craigslist and/or if it is worth my time to post an ad for sale on it. Thanks. I also just started using it. I've been posting ads on eBay, but I haven't had much luck with it so far. If you use eBay, I would suggest to try Craigslist first. Good luck!

"In the beginning God said, the four major landmasses would be Asia, Europe, Africa, and America. This has turned out to be very controversial, because God is also considered to be the Holy Spirit, which is a spirit, and not a major landmass." - The Buddha

A very few people have been advertising on craigslist in my city, and I know the owner of antique shop who has found a few things, but she's been very sporadic about it. I've done some "free" ads in the past. Sometimes the people responding are extremely aggressive and try to "fence" the item for more money than I'm willing to pay. Sometimes the item is in pretty bad shape or the person selling it doesn't have a clue as to what they're doing. Other times, they offer great prices and seem like decent people.

Anyway, I wouldn't bother with craigslist. The fees are too high and it doesn't give you that much control over your advertising. If you're really looking to get rid of something quickly, I would recommend just taking it to antique store or yard sale and asking for the best offer.

Here is a little about craigslist. The number of people that have used craigslist is almost impossible to determine. It is like asking the question "How many people have used email?" It has never been possible to collect the information in one place, and it is very hard to determine where the actual users are. Many of them use it in conjunction with other services.

I would say that at least 90% of the people that advertise on craigslist, have never seen the inside of a craigslist classified ad.
