Is it just not reliable compared to Honda 1.5 turbos, VW superchargers? Well, there's plenty of information out there on the web, in forums and here.

One common theme seems to be that Ford's turbocharged internal combustion engine's unreliability isn't worth the performance gain, or at least doesn't live up to hype. But the other side of this question is that the engine is not inherently more reliable than something like a naturally aspirated engine.

What we did was to run a series of reliability tests on a standard 2025 Ford Focus 1.0 EcoBoost engine. We're only interested in reliability here, whether there are any problems with the engine itself and not whether the car actually will drive as expected from time to time.

What our results show is that the new Ford engine is very likely just as reliable as any other engine. This means that if you can live with the power of the 1.0 EcoBoost then it's a great choice. Otherwise, the only reason to consider it is cost, although it may have reduced prices compared to many 1.5 litre Honda engines and some Euro options.

The 1.0 EcoBoost's big problem from the car manufacturers point of view isn't reliability - if a problem is uncovered they will fix it - but power. As a result of the limited power of the engine there is some cost involved in fixing any issue with the engine. While this is a very useful strategy from a marketing point of view it costs them money in the long run and it hurts them when an engine is returned because of a reliability issue and they can't get warranty work done on the engine because it isn't Ford branded.

Our tests show that you'll either get what you pay for, or perhaps more likely you won't get much. So, if you want strong power in a relatively low-cost vehicle (say 10k - 15k) and don't care about mileage or reliability, then the 1.0 EcoBoost turbocharged engine should do. For more money and with your heart set on lower oil changes, reliability worries and more expensive mechanics available, buy a more reliable car.

The Ford engine is pretty easy to work on, and the cost of repairs should be pretty low.

Forget everything you've heard about what 1.0 EcoBoost is not. It is the best, and has no real comparisons. If you look at the stats from a year ago, even with just the 4R heads on a 6.4L Ford, the numbers are astonishing. Now if you could just get the GM 6.6L V8 to work, it would be all the same, and we wouldn't have to deal with these damn Chevy motors

I'm going to vote for the Ford 6.6 EcoBoost in the V8 form because of the power and torque. But I really don't see the point of having an engine that runs on bio fuel because most people are not as environmentally aware as they need to be.

I don't see why people are so in love with the EcoBoost motors. It's great for torque but terrible for the gas mileage. Not even close to being efficient. I would say the GT-R engines are the only ones that are efficient and produce better than 30 MPG in the real world (meaning, the car is not going from 0-60 in a 2 second time period.)

And that V6 flathead motor was horrible. My grandfather had one. He would be the last person on earth to tell me to not buy that. But it was horribly inefficient. I'm still glad I got the Camry V6 and that little motor, when it came out. I loved that engine, for a while there.

I like my 2025 EcoBoost Camry. It has a very punchy and sporty look to it. It also gets pretty good gas mileage.
