Ford Motor Co. Says it's working to get the new Ford Escape and Ford Edge to give the company a fuel-efficiency lead. The company is testing prototype versions of the Escape Hybrid and Edge Hybrid to see how they drive.

The vehicle has a 2.0-liter, four-cylinder gasoline engine combined with a 13.8-kilowatt-hour lithium-ion battery. The vehicle gets an electric-only mode that allows the battery to recharge the vehicle while driving.

In the U.S.

The Ford Edge Hybrid is expected to be available in the second quarter of 2026. It won't take long before the Ford Escape and the Ford Edge Hybrid arrive. When they do, they will join the Ford Fusion Hybrid, Ford Taurus SHO, Lincoln MKZ Hybrid and the Ford Mustang GTE and EcoBoost in the company's lineup of fuel-efficient vehicles.

Ford also has introduced two of its first battery-electric vehicles, the Ford Smart, which will hit showrooms in the fourth quarter, and the Ford Focus Electric, which is scheduled to hit the market in 2026. Ford was among the auto industry leaders in fuel efficiency and, along with Toyota Motor Corp. And Honda Motor Co., is one of the companies developing a vehicle that would be powered solely by electricity.

The three companies are all trying to build a vehicle with a range of 300 miles or more, capable of reaching speeds of 85 mph and a top speed of 112 mph. The Ford Escape Hybrid will go on sale later this year. The Ford Edge Hybrid is scheduled to go on sale in the second quarter of 2026. Ford will offer the Ford Edge Hybrid in three trims.

No V8 with cylinder deactivation, no V10 with stop-start. No six-speed, no eight-speed, no CVT, no manual transmission with a dedicated downshift paddle and a neutral stop-start feature. If you count the last-generation (2002-2007) Ford F-150 with its four-cylinder engine and V6 engine with variable valve timing, the new Maverick's most direct competitor will be the Chevrolet Silverado 1500.

Ford has tried to get away from it's reputation as a gas guzzling company. In 2026 they sold their 2 millionth Fusion sedan. They say We can do better than that! They are making an attempt to make a more fuel efficient product and to attract new customers. I think the new vehicle is a good looking truck that will hold its own. I am not getting what Ford is really after though. The truck was a total flop in sales and the profit figures seem to tell the same story. I think the company is banking on the fact that the large crossover truck market is in its infancy.

I really have never driven a new truck. I have drove the 2026 generation Ford F-150 and that is what I have taken for granted. This new one seems more of an evolution than a revolution. There is noticeable difference in handling compared to the F-150. In fact I don't even see the Maverick as a truck. It is really a large SUV. The old F-150 was a truck, not an SUV. A lot of the new design seems like the previous generation is back. It looks like the car industry would be in an uproar if the Ford Mustang went back to a rear-wheel-drive platform. Just look at the new Mustang.

When we drive cars like the Honda Fit, the Kia Soul, and the Toyota Yaris, they're not so much small cars as they are affordable, economical, and flexible. And that's true enough. But if you want to go for a test drive in one of these small cars, you're more likely to be able to find a place to do it, because it's less likely you'll find someone willing to drive you.

A lot of that is because there just aren't enough people who want to drive them. The Yaris is selling for a reason: it's been around for a long time and it's become a pretty good value in terms of price and driving fun.
