Councils to remove redundant road signs

Councils to remove redundant road signs
In an effort to bring the UK's highways up to standard, the Government has started to offer 'awards' to local authorities who make an effort to eliminate redundant or anachronous street signs.

Local authorities that endeavour to decrease the amount of unnecessary signage on their streets are to be awarded in June 2013, as part of a drive to make street signs more eye-catching and easier to comprehend.

Across England, many local councils are beavering away to get rid of outdated signs, but the Government obviously has a bee in it's bonnet, and wants more authorities to commit to it's incentive. It has to be said, that when driving in an unfamiliar town, old and misleading signs can be a bane for the unaware driver.

The Transport Secretary, Patrick McLoughlin, commented: "This new award is about recognising and showcasing the good work being done by local authorities across the country and I urge councils who are taking action to tackle this problem to put themselves forward... Pointless signs blot our landscape, confuse motorists and are expensive to maintain"
