Connectivity for new cars by 2014
With online technology proving such an evolutionary step in the emergence of mobile phones and tablet computers, it is a no-brainer that carmakers should want to harness this technology in order to improve their vehicles. Indeed, a number of the world's larges car manufacturers are working to create the capability to connect to the internet from behind the wheel. The 'connected cars' could feasibly offer web-browsing from the vehicle dashboard, or online searching using a selection of voice commands, and even driving-tailored apps.
These ideas are not without their drawbacks and critics however. The statistics relating to accidents caused by using a mobile phone whilst driving make stark reading, and having the whole web at your fingertips whilst driving may indeed cause accident rates to shoot up again. It could be possible to become so immersed in your online experience that a motorist could forget they are still driving. Such worries are sure to be on the manufacturers radar however.
Whatever you think about the progress of internet technology and its invasion into our lives, it is sure that the technology will not be going away anytime soon, and in the coming years we may be setting alarms, updating our Facebook or checking the contents of our wifi-enabled fridges from our steering wheels.
