Brits favour Fords as first cars
A driver's first car is often remembered affectionately, and this shows when we look at the actual models being given by motorists as their favourite. The Ford Escort was one of the most frequently mentioned in the survey, and this first came onto the British market at the end of 1967. Also popular Fords were the Cortina, which was in production in the UK between 1962 and 1982, and the Ford Capri, produced between 1969 and 1986, which I'm sure many of us remember with fondness. Nearly 20% of those surveyed gave Ford as their favoured make of vehicle.
Austin and Vauxhall took the second and third spots for the most owned first cars, with results showing the age range of those motorists surveyed. The oldest first car, an Austin A40, was bought in 1947, also the year it was first introduced. A real rarity on the streets today. Whereas the newest first car given was a Peugeot 208, bought in 2012.
When asked what their favourite brand of car that they have owned was, apart from Ford, participants in the survey gave BMW as an answer 12% of the time, with Rover coming in third, with 7% of those surveyed favouring them.
What was your favourite vehicle you have owned? Perhaps it is your current one? Do you think it was a lot easier to obtain your first car than it is for new drivers nowadays?
