Almost 50% of freshers hold driving licence
Data, which was acumulated via a survey by UCAS Media, targetting over 11,000 first year students between the ages of 18 and 20, shows that of all freshers holding a driving license, 50% actually own a car. Of the remaining half, 25% said they had neither a vehicle nor access to one, whilst 22% said that they relied on a car owned by a parent or relative.
Of freshers that do not currently hold a driving license, 23% plan to learn to drive in the next few years, and 16% are currently learning to drive, whilst 10% have no driving skills whatsoever. Of freshers that said they owned a car, 33% said they located their vehicle on-site at their college or university, whilst the rest kept their car somewhere else.
When it comes time to spend money on their vehicles, of those freshers that owned their car, more than one third said they would usually spend between £500 and £1,000 per quarter on it, but at a pinch could stretch to £2,00. Around 11% of respondants mused with the idea of buying a cheap sub-£500 second hand car.
