Why was Fiesta ST discontinued?

The Fiesta ST was one of the most fun and affordable sporty cars you could buy in the UK for a while. In fact, when it was launched, it was the best value for money car in the range. But it was replaced by the much bigger and much more expensive Focus ST, which was aimed at a different audience.

While the new Focus ST is a fantastic car in its own right, it doesn't do anything to make us think, "Oh yeah, I really want to own that." And that's a shame, as the Fiesta ST was a great car. It was a practical, fun, practical and fun car.

So what happened? In an interview with Autocar earlier this year, Ford's chief engineer Mark Rushbrook was pretty frank about why the car was discontinued." "We had a plan for the car that would take people from A to B, and that wasn't just about the Ford brand. It was about people who wanted a car that could do that. That wasn't really part of our plans for the compact ST."

So, it was never going to be big, high-powered or be a rival for the Nissan GT-R or the Subaru WRX STI. Instead, it was going to be something that's practical, cheap, fun and easy to live with. And while that's all still very true, it's not quite the same thing.

So what happened to the car? It was replaced by the new Focus ST, and when it went into production in 2024, it didn't come with any of the same kit. "We thought, we'll give you this small little engine, and you can do your own tuning on it. We're not going to give you a lot of options, and you can tune it to do the job you want it to do. So that's what we tried to do with the Focus ST. But then there's a second problem - it's just so good."

The Focus ST is a brilliant car, but it's also very difficult to drive. The way it handles is a bit weird, and it's very difficult to get it to turn in.

Is a Ford Fiesta ST worth it?

It depends. It depends on how much you pay for the car, how much you want to spend, and what you get in return. Let's start there.

If you have a tight budget, you should probably avoid the Fiesta ST because it requires at least a little more coin than a standard ST does. If you have a decent budget, the extra money is mostly just one of the many factors you need to consider when buying a car. If you're interested in only going to the track once a week, spending a dollar more per week means you'll be driving an extra 200 miles over seven years. If you're interested in keeping up with your friends or your commute, that's more than enough money. On the other hand, if you see an opportunity to save a few bucks per month by driving more, then the ST is definitely worth looking into.

More Power, Less Fuel. All of a sudden, the ST comes with a lot less money in the way of fuel. For the same amount you would have paid at a gas station, the ST will run on a gallon of gas a week longer than a standard model. A simple way to save some money is to keep an eye on the gas gauge. By watching when the fuel in your tank is empty or almost empty and adjusting your gas mileage accordingly, it's possible to save more money on fuel over time. Even if it doesn't seem like much at first, this is a significant part of owning a car. It's probably something you should give plenty of thought to while selecting your next ride.

More Safety. While the other aspects of having the ST are all good for you, one of the best options is a little thing called the HPC or Hill Start Control. Every time you're cruising down a hill and begin to brake, the car's ESP system activates, letting the brakes engage while simultaneously sending power to the engine's wheels. This increases traction and stops your descent so smoothly that the only difference you feel is a tingling sensation. It can take a little getting used to, but those hills will become some of your favorites.

So I'm new to the world of modding and i'm trying to decide between a Focus ST and a Fiesta ST. The reason I'm asking is that the Focus is an older car and the Fiesta is a newer model, but I'm wondering if it makes sense to go for a newer model because the newer model is lighter and more fuel efficient? Thanks. I'm trying to decide between a Focus ST and a Fiesta ST. I've got the '05 Focus SE w/ the 6-speed. The first thing I do is look at the weight - they're about equal at 4200 lbs. the Fiesta weighs about 3100 lbs. the Fiesta has more hp, and is lighter (as well as being more compact), but the Focus' trunk is bigger. There are more torque specs (in pounds/foot) in the Fiesta ST than the Focus ST.

The other big factor is mileage. The Focus has much better mileage than the Fiesta. I get a bit over 31 mpg on the highway (so, probably around 32-33). On the highway I can cruise at 110, but still get over 30 mpg. The Fiesta ST gets close to the same, but at 70 mpg.

I think the best thing to do is take both cars out and drive them side by side. They're very similar, with no major differences. Just do the math.

In the end, I prefer the Fiesta ST. It's a little more powerful, has better mileage, and it's cheaper. And I like the looks of it.

This is my personal experience. I bought a Focus SE. I would have been fine with the ST, but after the first week I could not live without the sunroof. The only option I see is the ST wagon. I had it for about a year and it was great. A lot of fun to drive. Then I bought an ST coupe and the driving experience was just horrible. I could not keep up with traffic. It felt like it had no traction. I sold it and bought a Focus ST. It is everything that the wagon was and a lot more.

Is the Ford Fiesta ST fast?

Yes. That's the answer you want to hear. The Fiesta ST is not as fast as the previous car, but that's not a bad thing.

In fact, if you think about it, if it were, we'd all be driving Corollas and Fords, wouldn't we? The Fiesta ST is a very engaging car, it's light and nimble, and it's incredibly fun to drive. The engine is the same 1.6-litre unit used in the standard Fiesta, but it's been tuned to provide 184 bhp and 148 lb-ft of torque. The engine makes a respectable amount of power - more than the 1.4-litre turbocharged EcoBoost engines of the Focus ST and the Golf GTI Clubsport.

The new Ford Focus ST has a claimed top speed of 155 mph, with a 0-62mph time of 6.9 seconds. Our test car's top speed was 152mph, and the 0-62mph time was 6.5 seconds.

If you think you can match the car's performance on the track, then you're in for a pleasant surprise. The Fiesta ST certainly does not have the best time on the skidpad, but it does pretty well at the track.

So, yes, the Fiesta ST is fast. It's not as fast as a supercar, but it's fast. The only downside is that it doesn't offer much in the way of performance.

Would I buy one? With a starting price of 19,995, the Ford Fiesta ST has an enticing value proposition. In terms of performance, the Fiesta ST is no match for the likes of the Focus RS, but it will certainly do plenty to entertain.

That said, if I was looking to buy a trackday car, I'd probably look at something like the KTM 390 Duke, or the Volkswagen GTI Clubsport S. But for something with a little more fun and excitement, the Ford Fiesta ST is a worthy option.
