What to look out for when buying a Ford Focus?
What to look out for when buying a Ford Focus?
There are a number of Ford models still in production, but the best-selling model is the Ford Focus. While the vehicle is fairly similar to other car models on the market today, it remains an important model due to the fact that it's one of Ford's best-selling vehicles.
When you're considering the many available options, it's important to understand what your priorities are. There will be different factors that influence which model you opt for over the other two. Consider how much time you need the car for, along with the cost and practicality of purchasing.
Which model should you buy? The following model comparisons should give you a good understanding of which model suits you best. The main question to answer when you're buying a new car is: what will you be doing with your new model? Consider a car that suits your needs, whether that's the size, colour, features or safety rating. A car can be specified with any number of different factors. It's important to remember to choose a car model that suits your preferences as well as ensuring that there is enough space for the number of people who will be using it.
Some examples of specifications that you may find helpful are fuel consumption, road tax and tyre sizes. There are hundreds of combinations of sizes, colours and features that are on offer across models. You have a choice of engine variants and safety features, including active safety systems. There's a wide variety of interior themes, styles, and colours. These vary in size, style, comfort and technology.
For many drivers, it's a good idea to pick up a pre-owned car from the used car marketplace. This will help you to drive away with a car that you already know has an appropriate level of quality. In some markets, there's an expectation that used car prices should be high. So, if you want to get the best price, you may have to buy a new car that might not be as reliable as a second-hand model.
As new models roll off the production line, most people don't know their cars well enough to avoid the expensive mistakes. That's why it's important to do some research before you buy.
Is it worth buying a new Ford Focus?
If I wanted to, I could come up with lots of questions about the Ford Focus. It's an attractive and simple-to-drive family car. It's also very affordable.
How does it do on reliability? What do I know about it? How much is it worth? Which one should I choose? Let me give you answer. Yes, if you want the best value in a family car, then the new 2026 Focus will suit you. But I also want you to decide which model you really want.
All Focuses are very reliable cars. You shouldn't have any major concerns about the engine in the Focus.
But you should be aware that the petrol engines in the Focus aren't particularly good at running quietly. If you are planning to go for more than around 50 miles every day, then the four-cylinder petrol will probably disappoint.
It's a shame, because Ford have done a really good job with the engines. There is no turbo charging like the previous Focus and the new four-cylinder units use very sophisticated technology, so they will be very efficient. The V6 petrol engine is still a good option. It isn't quite as efficient as the four-cylinder petrol, but it is still good value.
The 2.0-litre diesel engine is better when it comes to driving quietly. The six-speed automatic transmission isn't a particularly good unit, either. But the manual is much better.
Which one is best for my needs? Well, the petrol is too noisy, and the diesel has too much vibration when it's running smoothly. So, what about the four-cylinder petrol? It drives smoothly, runs quickly, and it costs a little less than the two diesel models. What about the diesel? Well, it does drive smoothly and quite quickly. And it has the lowest UK road tax rate. But it has a lot of power. The top speed is only 140mph, but you won't mind because it does feel very energetic when you're driving it.
All these models are still very good cars to own, but you might find you prefer the styling of the older models.
Is the Ford Focus 1.0 EcoBoost any good?
Share. We've been told for a while that the Ford Focus 1.0 EcoBoost will be launched in the US in 2026. Today, however, we find out if it's any good.
The 1.0-litre EcoBoost petrol engine, which is the Focus' 1.0-litre turbocharged unit, produces 130hp and 184lb ft of torque, with maximum power available at just 4500rpm and peak torque at 1600rpm.
That makes it the most powerful engine in the Focus range, beating the current 1.0-litre 3-cylinder EcoBoost petrol engine to a 1.0-litre four-cylinder EcoBoost in the MK3 Focus, which produces 136hp and 191lb ft of torque.
However, the Ford Focus 1.0 EcoBoost has one key advantage over its big brother, which is its weight. The 1.0 EcoBoost weighs in at 1705kg, as opposed to the 2107kg of the 1.6-litre four-cylinder EcoBoost.
That makes the Focus 1.0 EcoBoost a real driver's car. And even though it's a big step up from the current model, it's still a great value proposition.
If you buy one of these cars, you will be well ahead of the pack, even in a class of cars that cost more than 15,000. It looks like the car has a slightly higher ride height, but it doesn't feel higher in terms of handling. It's quite smooth and composed for a small hatchback.
The acceleration is very strong and responsive and the 0-60mph time of 7.6 seconds is quick for this class.
The braking distance is also impressive, and when combined with the short turning circle and high speeds, it makes for an excellent city car.0 EcoBoost has a relatively poor reputation in the past for noise and vibration, but Ford has taken a lot of steps to address these issues and improve them significantly.
Noise levels are lower than ever, but it isn't quite perfect. It can be a little harsh at times, particularly at low speeds, but it's nothing like the previous generation car.
And vibration levels have been lowered even more, although it still isn't perfect.
Are 2023 Ford Focus reliable?
Yes, very
The Ford Focus is the best-selling midsize car in the US right now. It's also the 10th-most reliable model in our annual 10 Best Car Reliability Rankings.
A year or two ago we named the Nissan Versa as our most reliable midsize sedan. But a strong showing in our reliability report has moved it from top pick to fourth, so the next reliable sedan up the ladder is the Ford Focus. It's also the 2026 model, so don't put off buying one for that long.
If you've got an older Focus, be prepared for a slight reduction in engine displacement this year, but Ford promises the change won't be anything less than beneficial in terms of reliability, emissions and consumer driving experience. If you've never driven one, the five years of available updates can take a little getting used to, especially if you're used to a traditional manual. But there's simply no more appealing or efficient alternative for the city.
In this new Focus review we're going to focus on what makes this 2026 model of this sedan better. First and foremost, it's cheaper than some of its competition, and that translates into better fuel efficiency and reduced emissions. Second, the new body is lighter, more modern, and better looking. So you may as well wait until later in your current driving years to finally upgrade to this well-equipped, best-selling Focus. You'll want to look at other midsize sedans before you settle on this one. We're glad you asked. Here are our 2026 Best Car Reliability Rankings, listed by most reliable, least reliable, and our top four in order.
Note: The 2026 model year Focus is also getting a redesign. In the end, we think that redesign will only make the latest models better in the 2020s, so the new versions of the Ford Focus will fall closer to the middle in the rankings than they do in 2026. We haven't seen production versions of the 2026 focus yet, but these photos were enough to get us excited about the 2026 version.
Most reliable midsize sedan. If you're shopping for an affordable midsize sedan then you need to look no further than the Ford Focus. Our Most Reliable ranking tells it all.
