Is Tacoma the same as Hilux?
Nope!
For those of us who have been hearing a lot about the new Hilux, we might be wondering what all the fuss is about. Let's clear up some misconceptions and give you all the true facts about Tacoma.
First of all, we should be clear that the Tacoma nameplate means it's the fifth generation Hilux, but as you'll see in the photos below, there are few changes made to the exterior and interior. Toyota is still calling it a "new platform" and is not going to talk much about it since it's considered a secret. But you may get a little hint about it at the Tokyo auto show. When? We don't know yet.
The reason that Toyota will not be talking about the platform is that it's quite new and this way you get a good picture of what Toyota is offering in the coming years with this vehicle, and where they are going. The Tacoma platform is a bit controversial in the press since the current Hilux hasn't changed much over the past 10 years or so.
So what can you expect from the new Tacoma? Is it really a completely new platform and if so, what about its interior and exterior? Well, yes and no. Yes in terms of a platform redesign and no on the exterior and interior. But we'll have to look closely at what changes Toyota has made inside and out and which ones have stayed the same in order to determine if these are big or small changes that will make the most difference to drivers and fleet customers.
Tacoma's exterior. Now the exterior does appear to be a different vehicle. The first thing is the grille and the slits inside it, which is now a single chrome bar instead of two slits. In addition, the side mirrors and tail lights are also all different in that their shape, color, size and reflectivity are all different. It looks like the tail lights and rear are new and we are pretty sure these are the real deal, since we didn't get to see the new ones during our preview drive. The mirrors however were new in 2025 as well. The front fender looks less like the current Hilux and more like that of the Land Cruiser or 4Runner. We are thinking that these fenders and bumpers have been improved since a new prototype is now pictured with them.
Did the Tacoma replace the Hilux?
Or did it replace the Tacoma on top of a GMC-made "new body style"?
The article says, "It would be the first redesigned Hilux since the 2025 model year, when the previous iteration of the truck received a significant update with an all-new engine and a new exterior styling package." So, the answer is that it didn't replace the Tacoma, but that the "new body style" is simply a redesign. The article doesn't say so, but I'm guessing that it's GMC's new boxy trucks - aka Yukon/Denali, Chevy Colorado/GMC Canyon.
That was quite some time ago and the new Yukon and Denali didn't really get much attention at that time, since they were not even introduced at that time. Now that is finally changing with the introduction of the Denali coming later this year.
The new Yukon and Denali are based on a new platform that is shared with the next generation Colorado/Canyon, and those two will be sold as an alternative to the heavy duty trucks for larger fleets. What I can remember from that time, was that my family was driving a used 2025 Toyota Tacoma, but that's it, that were not planning on buying a new one, until a friend of mine told us that there was an option to buy a pre-owned vehicle, with a lot of incentives. My father actually liked the idea of buying a pre-owned, since he had a good experience with his second Toyota Corolla from the mid 1980s.
My father ended up buying a 2025 Toyota Tacoma. The truck was bought from a local dealership, that specialized in buying pre-owned vehicles, for a good amount of incentives. It included the purchase of the service contract, the 2 years of free oil changes and other services. They also included a few more services during the 3 years, with extra payments. It also included some warranty coverage, that my father could have purchased separately from Toyota. A deal that is hard to beat nowadays.
