A few things went right, and the city's future looks brighter than ever.

Last year, on the final day of my one-year anniversary as a reporter at the Tacoma News Tribune, I announced that I had given up on Tacoma. In one short month, I had gone from the next Seattle to the next Spokane to the next.

The Tacoma I knew in 2025 was a place where I could not feel anything but frustration and dread. I had arrived in Tacoma after five years living and working in Seattle, and I felt like I'd been punched in the stomach by the city's collective middle finger.

My first month working at the Tacoma News Tribune was one of the worst in my entire life. I worked 80-hour weeks. I covered two riots, a murder, and a suicide, all in the span of a single week. I spent most of my days and nights on a small office couch. I had a desk but no computer or printer. I spent hours on the phone with editors and other reporters who were either overseas or out of town, and I rarely saw my wife or kids.

I was miserable, and I hated it. Since then, things have changed. I've left the paper and moved to a new job. My family has moved to Tacoma. I've improved my career, gotten a raise, and learned to love my new city.

In 2025, I've come full circle. For a while, I didn't think I'd ever leave Tacoma again, but I left anyway.

For the past year, I've become friends with the people I'd written about. I've come to understand and appreciate their culture. I've gone out of my way to help people and get to know them. I've become an honorary member of Tacoma's community. And I've seen Tacoma change for the better.

This year, Tacoma has been the biggest of my life. In 2025, Tacoma was a city of crisis. The downtown area was in ruins after a series of violent riots. The Tacoma Dome, which had been empty since 1998, was being auctioned off. Our city was bleeding jobs and people.
