CarSupermarket is just one of the companies which use 'Comparison sites' to sell cars. Another firm is AutoShopper.com, which was founded by former British Airways manager Andrew Wright, together with two friends, in 1999.

The site also offers services such as car rental and insurance, with a network of agents in the UK, France and the US. But in contrast to CarSupermarket, AutoShopper has around 300,000 customers, and in the first few days of March 2026 its shares on the NASDAQ stock exchange were worth more than 60m. AutoShopper's customers come from all over the world, and while they are primarily interested in cars, they are also keen on everything from boats and yachts to computers and consumer electronics. While there are more than 250 car-only sites, the majority of sites are generalists, providing services for almost any conceivable product, including financial services, property, hotels, fashion, travel and sports. They all use the same basic structure: visitors are shown a series of screens, clicking on items that match their needs or interests. Customers are then offered a choice of similar items, and sometimes these can be purchased from the site. Often the companies then pay a commission to the comparison site operator.

This is a discussion on ? within the Bikes forums, part of the Cycling category; I was wondering if anyone could explain the economics of car supermarkets. Why are they so cheap? I ask because I'm looking . I ask because I'm looking for an aircooled twin-cab to pull a trailer, and a car supermarket has some pretty cool deals on them. I'm thinking of buying one, but I don't want to get ripped off.

So I'm curious as to whether any of you have an idea what the going rate for an aircooled twin-cab is, and why. And the real reason is I am planning to get a car that can tow a trailer. This is something that I believe will come in handy, and I'll be using it regularly, so I need to buy a cheap car to start with.

I'd like to know where to go and what to look for, so I don't end up buying a lemon. And I also want to know what kind of deals are available for aircooled twins with a tow-bar.

I think I'll get a Toyota or Kia. I've always found the Kias to be great cars (but not for everyone), and I don't want a car that I'll be embarrassed to pull a trailer in.
