What do you think? Name. Email Address. I currently own a 2025 Ford Escape. My wife and I traded our 2025 Honda Odyssey minivan for it. In its 4 years we've averaged 17,000 miles per year. The only problem we've had with it was the clutch slipping and having to replace it. Since then it's been pretty reliable. And I absolutely love my Escape. It's easy to maneuver, and the seats are very comfortable. The hatch also offers more storage than I'd ever need. But, it's the engine and transmission that draw me back to Ford.
It's been really great to get a vehicle that doesn't require gas. It's been more economical than the minivan. I don't feel like I'm "driving a gas guzzling behemoth," which is always a plus in my book. What do you all think?

As a new car, we've seen a lot of people with problems in their old focus. The vast majority have been covered in warranty, but they've gone wrong in the factory service history and come up without warranty. I can't remember any complaints with the 1.6 though, sorry. The problems could be that the Focus 1.6 only has a few years on it so its an area where it's still a bit tricky. The complaints have mainly been mechanical/engine failures though.
The main issues we've seen are electrical problems. It would seem that the early car's were poorly calibrated and when something goes wrong there's a tendency to blame it on mains voltage which might not be actually the case.
Engine - Most common is camshaft failure due to weak oil flow and high oil pressure. We've had to replace the cam cover for the 1.6 on our workshop floor (to give you an idea of size) as it was badly worn and cracked. These were mostly engine mounts that were giving trouble. If you've ever looked at one of those before, its a large plastic box with all sorts of internal parts and metal covers. Its very simple to look at. The main engine mounts in question are right behind the front wheel arches at the bottom of the car and under the chassis rails. We changed over the 1.8 from a different customer and then fitted their 1.6s and we've now had over 50 of them out of the workshop at this stage - we're only averaging one every 4 days. We use a cam cover with a filter built into the base, one of these lasts around 5 years before the whole part needs to be replaced.

We've heard this question time and again, and every time, it's the same answer: Not really. It's like, Yes, some of the time.
There's a reason for this. It's complicated.
First, let's look at what it means to say that a car gets fewer miles to the gallon when we're talking about diesels. When we say this, what we mean is that a four-cylinder Ford Focus diesels gets 14.0 miles per gallon in EPA city and 17.7 miles per gallon on the highway, while a six-cylinder version of the same car gets only 13.4 mpg city and 18.8 mpg highway. This is not because the six-cylinder diesel is the better car. This is not because it's more efficient. The difference is simply the product of power and torque: It's possible to squeeze more power from a diesel than from a gasoline engine, but it comes at a cost, in terms of fuel efficiency.
The diesel motor in a Focus has 180 horsepower, which is less than the gas engine on the same car. In terms of horsepower, the diesel is equivalent to a Ford 150 pickup truck or a Honda CR-V minivan, but it has a few tricks up its sleeve. Its power comes from a special turbocharger, called a Roots blower, which compresses air in a very specific way, making it more powerful than a normal turbocharger. And the diesel also has a particulate filter, which removes very fine soot particles from the engine. So the diesel engine might be more powerful, but it isn't just a stronger engine. A diesel uses less fuel than a gasoline engine, and it produces less pollution.
What does this have to do with mileage? It makes a big difference. First, there's the size of the engine. Smaller engines, particularly smaller-displacement engines, do better in terms of mileage. This is true of nearly every type of engine, from a small motorcycle engine, to a 2.
