Jaguar Land Rover working around the clock to fulfill demand
The reason for this extending of working hours is to help meet current global demand for the Range Rover Evoque, the Compact SUV, which has sold more than 90,000 units since it's introduction to the market last September. The Evoque, which has been designed for urban motorists who have requirements for good fuel economy and lower CO2 emissions, is being exported to over 170 markets worldwide, with large demand in China and other emergent economies. In fact, it has proved to be so popular that prior to being introduced for sale, Land Rover stated that they had had around 18,000 pre-orders for the vehicle.
The new night shift at Halewood, commencing at 9:30pm, is thought to have introduced around a thousand new jobs to the area, increasing the plant's employee count to near on 4,500. This means the workforce has almost tripled over the past 3 years, and is currently the most numerous is has been for 20 years. As well as producing the Evoque, the plant will also be working on Land Rover's Freelander 2, which has recently been updated.
Richard Else, Operations Director at Halewood has stated "Moving production to three shifts and working 24 hours a day will allow us to significantly reduce the time a customer has to wait for their new Range Rover Evoque."
