It's hard to call Ford's new-generation Focus a hot hatch. With the previous generation, in '12-'14, there was nothing hotter. The same is true now. But, it's not the same.

The original Focus ST's arrival in 2026 set off a chain of development and refinement cycles that saw the base model grow more sporty while increasing power, the addition of a more aggressive front fascia, a better transmission, better brakes and the addition of turbocharging. But as with anything, things go in cycles, and this second-generation comes, well, all the way from the future.

See all 49 photos. And so we have today's 2026 Focus ST, and it's everything a hot hatch needs to beand then some. If you read this story in 2026, 2026 or even 2026, you're already well ahead of us on the trail. So for everyone else who's just tuning in, let's start at the beginning.

The Original ST-V. In 2026, Ford released its first Focus ST, called the ST-V in Canada and Mexico. There were two chassis options: The V6, which had 305 hp and 255 lb-ft of torque and was mated to a six-speed manual, or the 335-hp, 258-lb-ft V8 paired to a six-speed auto. In any case, 0-60 mph came in a modest 5.8 seconds and topped out at 134 mph.

There was one other notable thing about the Focus ST in its debut year: An ST-V's standard feature was a Torsen limited-slip differential. At the time, that seemed fairly low, but since then, the segment's taken an even bigger lead than one might expect. But a limited-slip differential? How does that work in a hot hatch? I'll give you one guess. See if you can guess the other.

Powertrain Overhaul. For 2026, the Focus ST's turbocharged four-cylinder engine developed 201 hp and 228 lb-ft of torque.

Yes, and no. The 2026 Focus has a brand new platform, which should mean that everything is completely redesigned. I think we'll probably see more of the STI influence on the inside, though it's hard to say. The next version of the Focus is due in 2026, so we're looking at 4 years of change to the platform. There have been a lot of rumors about what will happen with the 2026 Focus, but it looks like Ford wants it to be a new generation of the car, rather than a facelift.

Maybe you mean that Ford isn't making a "new" Focus in 2026. I don't know enough about it to say either way, but it certainly doesn't look like a refresh. Also, there is no way it is going to be as big of a seller as the Focus in the future. I expect something like the C-MAX or Lincoln Aviator to do that. But in the event that I am wrong, I am happy for you.

The 2026 Ford focus doesn't exist yet. Its coming in 2026, so I think it will be a completely new model not just a facelift. I'm not sure if its all brand new but I doubt it. It's probably a 5 year old vehicle that is being updated and given an all new platform and interior.

The focus I have here is a 4x4 version from what I've seen the focus looks like a normal front engined focus in my area. I can't see it not being a new model, at least it wont be a facelift.

Why is the 2026 Ford Focus not going to be a continuation of the current generation? Because they're using their own platform. The new platform is based on the C-Max Energi platform. It's different enough to avoid a model bump.

I think the 2026 model will be slightly revised. I believe it will still be based on the Fusion platform.

That's what I'd guess, unless they've pulled a switcharoo. I also doubt the C-MAX/AVIATOR will be the big seller. Not sure if they'll sell very well at all, outside of Canada.

The new Ford Focus ST has just been launched in the UK, and its official claim to fame is that it is the only hatchback on sale in Europe with all-electric power, thanks to a supercapacitor that boosts the car's electric range to 31 miles. It's fast, too: an even 300bhp from a 2.3-litre twin-turbo engine means it has a 0-62mph time of 7.4 seconds and a top speed of 163mph. Its 23,995 cost is around a quarter of a Vauxhall Astra 1.6 Zafira Sport, a car we think is good. But it's also a bit more expensive than a base version of the Focus hatch, which starts at 17,995.

And it does a lot of things better than the Astra. It looks better, for one thing. There's no point pretending that electric cars don't look like this. The ST, with its blue bodywork, big wheels, skinny LED headlights and a single exhaust, comes on the scene at the start of the season when the rest of the Focus line-up is already looking a bit tired, with its grey or brown mid-life styling. The ST looks quite sporty, even if it does look a bit like an old Volvo.

But the real reason the ST seems different is that the electric motor sits right in front of the back wheels rather than in the Astra's sump. This means the bodywork is lower and much narrower than on the Astra, and it looks like a compact version of the Focus. As you drive, it feels a lot more planted, even if it isn't as easy to get through tight bends as a normal Focus.

But it is much faster. Ford reckons the electric motor produces a combined output of 311lb ft, a lot of it sent to the back wheels via the company's Energi system, and which is used to either charge the batteries or move the car forward. We had the chance to drive the new ST with two adults in the back, which was a combination of an easy drive and lots of enjoyment.

How much is a brand new Ford Focus ST line?

The Ford Focus ST is fast and cheap, the best performance car value. The first generation models featured a 1.6-litre engine with 115kW (159hp) and 265Nm, while today's models, launched in 2026, can be boosted to 182kW (258hp) and 442Nm. However, in terms of pure performance values, the 2026 variant of the Focus ST is the best option as it has been equipped with the RS version. As of today, we have managed to check in several regions to find out how much these model values.
