David Crane. On June 25, 2024. I got a chance to test drive the new Nissan Navara at the beginning of the month and I have to say that it was the best truck I've driven in a long time. It was very comfortable, well equipped and felt like a real truck. I didn't want to get out of it as soon as I could. So I thought it would be a good idea to check out the new Hilux.

The Hilux is smaller than the Navara and it doesn't look like it's going to be as big a truck as the Navara but it turns out that it has more cargo space than the Navara. The Hilux is rated at 1220 litres and is 6 cm shorter and 10 cm narrower than the Navara. However, it has about 80 litres more cargo space.

I tested it out in the morning in the summer in Toronto. It's not as warm in the winter as it is in the summer so I wasn't able to drive it during the day as much as I should have done. But I did make the most of my early morning drive in the sun.

The new Hilux has a new 4.0-litre V6 engine which produces 250 hp and 380 Nm of torque and an all-new 6-speed automatic transmission. The engine is also connected to an all-new all-wheel-drive system.

The engine feels a little bit like a diesel but it also has a slight amount of turbo boost. It's a very smooth power delivery that sounds nice.

In the Hilux you also get standard features like hill hold assist, low and high speed cruise control, Bluetooth connectivity, a reversing camera, reverse sensors, trailer sway control, trailer braking, a navigation system and satellite radio. The Hilux is only available in two trim levels. The base one is the HX and the top trim level is the SX.

I tested the Hilux in the HX trim level. The seats are fairly comfortable and the steering wheel is a bit bigger than the one on the Navara. It has a nice, easy to use instrument cluster with controls that are easy to find. There's a full size arm rest on the passenger side which isn't there on the Navara.
