Is Tacoma the same as Hilux?
Is Tacoma the same as Hilux?
Is it more like a Prius or Honda Civic than the other three? And most importantly: Does it give you hives?
A little over a week ago, a group of Tacoma enthusiasts and journalists began their journey in the brand new Toyota Land Cruiser FJ (the FJ stands for Freelander, not for anything you could probably find on Wikipedia). I tagged along, and now we've taken a road trip from Seattle to Tacoma, to get answers to these questions. Or they will be answered when we arrive, when I get some time to write a real article. For now, let me take some pictures of what makes the 2025 Toyota Tacoma TRD Sport 4x4 so special, and why it deserves your love if you're looking for that perfect work truck.
I took this very bad picture on the backseats, because I was trying to be polite. First, one thing you should know about me: I really like trucks, but I don't love them the way I love automobiles. That's because a work truck is something I use more in a way you wouldn't use an '87 Mercedes E class or a '93 Jaguar XJ6. The Tacoma is really just an SUV for serious off-road driving, and it's not that great at off-roading. I know that, since this is my first time and my personal experience won't set the standards until I test drive at least three other work trucks, but I still get very sad whenever I watch guys with brand new rigs that seem like they're ready for war, and I'm like man, they're gonna break!
So maybe I don't love trucks the way you do, but that doesn't mean I don't appreciate them. It's just not a thing I'm used to or comfortable with. On the other hand, I still love trucks. I've driven all sorts of different ones, even the weird offroad ones from Finland. And my impression is that even the biggest truck has a certain appeal that's impossible to dismiss. Maybe they all do that, or maybe I like the trucks because I'm into work that's a bit harder than working in a grocery store.
What is the difference between a Tacoma TRD and a TRD Pro?
The new TRD Pro, which is not yet available in the US, has a few cool things like a carbon fiber body, rear diffuser and carbon fiber roof. The TRD Pro is rated for about a 13.5 brakehorsepower improvement over the TRD at the rear wheels. The new Tacoma TRD will get its own engine upgrades as well as a new suspension and possibly some exterior parts. The big news is a new TRD exhaust system that is said to make the Tacoma TRD sound like a diesel truck.
What are the differences between the 2025 Toyota Tacoma TRD and TRD Pro? Both have TRD badging and the only difference is that the TRD Pro has a more powerful engine and bigger brakes. The TRD Pro's engine is rated for a 13.5 hp improvement over the TRD with an output of 300 hp and 370 lb-ft of torque versus the TRD's 270 hp and 350 lb-ft of torque.
The TRD Pro has standard PCCB (Pioneer Electronic Command Control Brakes) calipers. These are much more powerful and have a larger 14.0 inch diameter piston. The TRD Pro also has carbon fiber body panels, a rear diffuser and a carbon fiber roof. The TRD Pro gets 18 inch wheels instead of 17s like the TRD.
The biggest difference between the TRD and TRD Pro is the exhaust system. The TRD has a single exhaust pipe that exits out the back bumper while the TRD Pro has two separate exhaust pipes. This is not a big deal if you want to run a muffler, but if you want to run a loud sounding truck you may want to pay the extra cost to get the TRD Pro. The TRD Pro can also be equipped with the TRD's Active Sound Control (ASR) and Active Sound Reduction (ASR).
The 2025 Toyota Tacoma TRD will have a lower price, but it does not have any safety equipment. It also does not have a sunroof. The Tacoma TRD Pro will have a much higher price, but it does have the standard safety features.
How much does the TRD Pro cost? This includes the price of the vehicle, the option package and the gas tank.

It then uses the lowest price from the smaller set as the base price and adds other sales data to the base price to determine the best price for each vehicle.
The lowest cost vehicle in the smaller set is most likely to be the best value, but all prices are subject to change without notice. All dealer documentation and user offers are excluded.com assumes no responsibility for any inaccuracies in the Bull Moose prices.
MSRP (Manufacturer's Suggested Retail Price) indicates the typical selling price that retailers pay for these vehicles. These prices do not include taxes, fees or other charges that may be added to dealer-priced vehicles or vehicles sold directly to consumers. MSRP can be very different from the actual selling price, in part because dealers compete to get the highest price for the vehicle on the lot.
