Is NADA the same as JD Power?
Last year, we asked folks to share their experience with the service and/or price offered by their favorite car-buying brand. Now it's time to take a look at the JD Power 2023 Auto Retail Site Ratings and see what's in common among some of the most well-known car buying brands and retailers. We'll try to determine which service providers rank consistently well among these major players. There are two ratings in the following rankings: total experience and service.
As we do each year, we'll start by looking at how the auto industry as a whole ranks among its peers, comparing our JD Power 2023 Auto Retail Survey results from last year with this year's surveys and scores. These rankings are based on overall website scores. JD Power's top five companies in 2023 were the same in 2015:
Power's AutoRetail.com, a division of The Car Dealer Group (owned by Automotive News Media) CARMAX. UsedCarSource. EGarageCar. Cars.com As you might have guessed from our company name, AutoRetail.com is rated highest for retail websites. CARMAX is second highest and is followed by UsedCarSource. Interestingly, the ranking of auto retail websites has changed from last year. Last year, eGarageCar was ranked higher than the two services owned by Cars. But this year, eGarageCar falls behind Cars.
Looking at each score's ranking, you can find a few things that are consistent among the top five companies: E-Commerce. Automotive services: Cars.com's first-place ranking is based largely on its overall experience, but that's only part of what it offers.
Third place goes to UsedCarSource, which was founded in 1985 as a dealer-focused site, as well as CarMax's AutoMax.com, and fourth place goes to Carvana, which has made a big push into online car sales as well as e-commerce. All five of the car companies rank high on service.

Why is NADA so much higher than KBB?
So I was wondering why NADA is so much higher than KBB and then I was looking at my last car that I bought with NADA (It was a year ago and I didn't even know about the website). The car was actually in really good condition and I thought it was a very good deal. When I looked at the KBB, I didn't really notice anything that was different than NADA's. They didn't seem to have any pictures or anything on the cars, just a picture of the dealer and a few pages of information about the car. It's not really worth mentioning the KBB because it's not like it's better or worse. I'm just curious as to why NADA is so much higher. I thought it was pretty good, but I'm not sure if it's worth it. I'm not asking anyone to tell me that it's not, just wondering why NADA is so much higher than KBB.
If you are comparing prices on the same model vehicle, how many miles and features do they have? Also, what is the date of the NADA-published value? Because you're comparing apples to oranges. KBB and NADA are two different vehicles.
One of the main points of NADA is to reflect the true market value of a vehicle. So when a dealer is trying to oversell you, he may be able to get away with it because the car may be undervalued by NADWhen NADA is the true value, it allows buyers to shop with a more educated eye.
What is NADA book value?

NADA book value is the value that an owner would have in his possession if he sold the assets of the dealership, as described in the NADA report. The value does not reflect all of the dealership's assets, liabilities or even the value of the dealership's brand name and reputation.
It is not determined by financial statements. In some cases it may be higher than a full accounting of net assets, which includes depreciation, inventory, non-operating assets, etc.
All assets must be evaluated to determine NADA book value because they affect value differently. For example, real estate, inventory and some vehicles are depreciated and reported as part of net operating income in the financial statements.

How do you find out what a truck is worth?
It's easy: Use the Internet and ask the people who will buy it.
You can also go to your local truck dealership and ask them how much they think you can get for your truck, given the condition you've put it in, the price of fuel and new or used parts, the market condition, and the condition of the engine. They're quite good at this; they know which auction houses are fair and which are not. They know what a dealer's invoice comes to if he sells you a brand-new truck, but they also know what the average used-car prices are so you get a fair and accurate idea of what a used truck can command.
They may be able to provide some good information, even before you go to the dealers and find out about the used truck market. If you see one advertised as a "certified new" truck for sale by a specific manufacturer, the dealer probably has the right paperwork and is giving the right kind of attention to that truck. That means you don't have to pay much for it. At least you know there won't be a problem getting a good trade-in on it. In other words, the dealer is telling you the price the dealer paid for the truck and then adding his mark up on top of it. It's easy to make an educated guess about the true market price of a truck using this technique.
Before you go to the dealership and get their best bid on your truck, consider how much you are willing to pay. If they offer to take your truck off your hands in return for your paying for gas all the way back home that may be a sweet deal if you know they'll sell your truck for a fair price. Remember, the trade-in doesn't include any allowance for labor, parts, or other costs and will generally be less than the actual retail price you paid for the vehicle. If you already had someone else buy the truck and were going to use him or her to help you in any way, now is probably not a good time to buy the truck, because this could interfere with his or her selling it for you in a reasonable amount of time.
The best place to learn about the cost of parts, labor, and the like is to do a search for truck parts quotes in your area and compare them to your own cost.
