Is Ford releasing a new Focus RS?

Is Ford releasing a new Focus RS?

Is Ford making a 2025 Focus RS?

Ford is one of the few automakers that have not revealed their plans for the next decade, but the good news is that the 2026 Focus RS and Ford GT are proof that Ford will be present in 2026. The same car company that has only produced the Focus RS in the past 3 years has decided to go on with it again, and with some interesting developments.

Ford has already confirmed that the next-gen Focus RS will be a mid-engined model, but they haven't disclosed any more information. There is nothing more about the new model that we know at this moment, which makes us curious.

Is Ford making a 2026 Focus RS? We think that Ford is testing the water and trying to find out what the demand for this car is going to be. That is why there is no info about the car's design, the transmission system, or even the powertrain.

What we can say is that the Ford Focus RS is the highest-priced model of the brand and is the Focus RS' second evolution since it was introduced in 2026. This makes us think that Ford is developing a completely new platform, an engine that's higher than the existing 4-cylinder 2.3-liter EcoBoost, and a more powerful transmission system.

It is also likely that the RS will be equipped with a plug-in hybrid system and a new electric motor. These specs can't be confirmed at this point, but we do know that Ford has been planning to produce a 5-cylinder, turbocharged RS.

We can expect a mid-engined model to be on sale at some point in the next decade. We know that the next-gen Focus RS will be revealed in 2026, but we're not sure when it will be available in the market.

Let us know your thoughts on the matter. This article was originally published on Top Gear.

Is the 2026 Focus RS real?

In the last couple of years Volkswagen has been trying to reestablish its brand as a performance car manufacturer, with the GTI and GTD serving that purpose. So it's not really a shock that a Focus RS could be making its way to dealerships at some point in the future.

That said, there's been little information about what would be driving this new GTI killer other than a 'mid-engine', turbocharged Focus RS could debut in 2026. But after our conversation with VW Group's Head of Performance Stefan Sommer it appears those rumors were more real than ever.

What do you have here, and what does it replace? Sommer confirmed that the GTI isn't going anywhere any time soon, but that the platform is indeed being tweaked to accommodate a new high-performance model. The GTI and Jetta GLI are the only two left on the platform, he told R&T. In a way, it could be seen as an evolution, but also a platform change, because now it's for a performance car.

But will that performance car even look like a GTI? There are still several possibilities when it comes to the aesthetics of the next RS, including a coupe and a hatchback. And in fact, Sommer made it clear that at least a hatchback version of the new RS is in the cards. We're discussing the possibility that the RS has a hatchback in addition to its coupe, he told R&T. The idea is that, if you look at the RS and you want to sell more RS, then you have to have a hatchback.

Could that mean that the coupe version of the new RS will instead be a GTD? While that seems unlikely, Sommer says that it's possible. If you think about it, the GTI and GLI have come over from the Jetta platform, so now we have two new versions of the same platform. The GTD was something we added to that platform, so the GTD can also sit on that platform.

Is Ford releasing a new Focus RS?

Rumor says that Ford is planning a new performance variant of their current model. I say rumour because according to Autocar, it was only mentioned in passing, and a source close to the matter states that the Focus RS is more of an 'RS-inspired model'. This would mean that Ford just created an additional model, but without releasing a new nameplate.

The Focus RS will be released next year as a 2026 model in the US, and the first official images surfaced just a couple of days ago (via Autocar, and now also via Evo), which has us eager to read and hear more. At the moment, the information around this is limited to just a few tidbits. The first hint came with the images, but only a few parts of the car are shown. According to Autocar, there are rumors surrounding the release date of the Focus RS. It might be released as early as next summer in selected markets, before arriving to US shores for good next year. A few weeks ago, several spy shots were leaked and shared, and another of those have surfaced in Auto and Jalopnik recently. Those pics show a few parts of the interior and a picture of the dashboard which could be the Focus RS, since we cannot see any nameplates or badges on the side.

A new Focus RS. The photos show that the production car will get new tail lights and a dual exhaust. The interior looks similar to the regular Focus, although you can see some red racing seats in the image. The other part of the image we get from both sources is a view of the wheels of the upcoming RS model. These are 18-inches front and 20-inches in the rear, looking like staggered, flat 4 wheels. The center caps are white and will probably be the exclusive feature of the RS. They will likely be wider and look wider. The only difference is that these caps will be painted black and not red, unlike the current, non-RS Focus models. The exterior also looks exactly like the regular Focus. In particular, it looks much sleeker, sportier and more aggressive, with many details changed compared to the current model.

The only thing is that while driving slowly, even through residential areas, it seems like it's quite loud. My ears hurt a bit when I drive it. So it might be very similar, or it might be a different model.
