How much will the new 2023 Colorado cost?
How much does a 2023 Chevrolet Colorado ZR2 cost?
We break down the price of America's lightest truck
The Chevrolet Colorado ZR2 is America's first off-road truck, but it hasn't exactly gone unnoticed by the general public. In fact, there are more than 250,000 ZR2s registered on the new-vehicle inventory, according to the N.D.We wanted to find out just how much a new Chevrolet Colorado ZR2 retails for, so we compared it to the truck that came before it, the Chevrolet Colorado Z71, which debuted in 2024.
For starters, the new ZR2 weighs an average of 200 pounds less than the Z71, and it doesn't have a supercharger bolted to the nose of the engine. So how much less does a ZR2 cost? As for fuel economy, the ZR2 comes standard with a 2.9-liter inline-four engine with direct injection that produces 325 horsepower and 330 lb-ft of torque. The ZR2's 3.0-liter V6 engine produces up to 420 hp and 410 lb-ft of torque. It's all backed by a 10-speed automatic transmission.
Chevrolet says its new ZR2 will perform better on the trail than the truck it replaces, thanks to the larger skid plates, upgraded suspension components, and more protection. It even has a longer wheelbase and more suspension travel, which allows the truck to better absorb the bumps.
Are 2023 Chevy Colorados selling well?
(Hint: They do)
It's hard to have too much of a good thing and we know that. People like to say that "when in doubt, do more of what you're doing." Well, not necessarily always. The first of the '20's Chevy Colorado pickups is already being sold from the factory and as of August 21, 2024 there are already over 19,500 pre-orders taken for production, meaning that demand is already exceeding Chevy's manufacturing projections. You know Chevy will come through with another '20 to sell, even though everyone was expecting a 2024 model. That's because this little pickup has been a big hit for Chevy so far and their manufacturing experience tells them it's time to deliver.
What I'm looking at here are pre-sale numbers. They don't mean anything outside of these companies in a vacuum. Even if the numbers look great, those customers might be ready to order but can't or don't want to go through a dealers. It's easy to make your own numbers look great if they don't include all the "no's." If one could look into the future, though, I'd expect better pre-sale numbers across the board for the "20s." Here's some evidence. According to AutoTrader.com, their traffic of "Colorado," "Rav4" and "Volt" pickup searches is down 6%, which means sales could start moving downward next year. What I'm looking at here is people choosing a new truck -- a purchase that might not be for another 5 years -- while the Volt was still available.
You know when you go back on the internet for old pictures -- even for pictures like this one of the first Gen. 2 models? They're worth looking at (although I don't see an interior that matches my eye yet.) Anyway, I'll share them below along with new info about the Gen.
The information is pretty basic at this point. The engine is going to be 3.5l V6 as before, but it will be mated to the 8-speed automatic transmission.
