You walk in and fill up at one of the pumps. You then choose one of the many brands you like. And from there the price per litre of your filling goes through the roof.

So what do you get from all this? We decided to find out and see if there's anything else hidden in between the lines. What we wanted to learn about this supermarket format is: Do it actually work on any costs, from a fuel perspective, on a daily basis? If not, is it viable? Is it viable on any fuel perspective? Is it viable for diesel (including rail)? Is it not only viable but the cheapest way to do things? To find out, we set up a few scenarios where were filling up the same vehicle over a period of four weeks, using three brands - Shell, BP and VL - so that we could compare them all to each other. And we did this against two petrol stations: The Metro, and The Lanes.

When we got the full results, we even managed to spot a few things along the way, which we thought readers would also be interested in knowing about. They're revealed below.

Let's dig in. The first experiment. Experiment 1 - Gasoline/Shell. To find out the best gas stations in Melbourne, we used The Metro and VL as our base stations, both located in Melbourne CBD, and The Lanes in North Melbourne. These were filled with fuel (gasoline and diesel) over a span of 4 weeks from November 26 until December 16, 2024. During that time, we had three fuel types to fill from: Shell, BP, and VL. In total, we ran 19 different scenarios against each base station.

We used four cars and used the full tank range of the three fuels to ensure we got all the information possible.58 per litre.25.60 per litre.

In total, we filled 2024 litres of fuel at Shell and BP compared to 1563 litres at The Lanes.

Where do car supermarkets get their cars from?

(Oh, wait, I don't think she did that, or at least I don't remember her doing that.

Dacia is the third-biggest French-owned car maker in Europe with a market share of 8 percent, behind Renault and Peugeot. Its market share fell by one percent year-on-year. Last week's earnings conference presentation showed Dacia is profitable, but it cannot yet survive without the French investment funds that were meant to be the company's saviors, industry insiders say.

Investors who believed in this plan include the French state-owned banks and the Renault-Nissan alliance, which has a stake of 31 percent in Renault-Dacia.
