Cost of servicing is falling
The current average price for a car service, as found in the poll by Warranty Direct, provider of consumer car warranties, is now £74.70. This is around £8.18 per hour less than it was last year, and has been put down to increased competition between manufacturer-backed garages and independent ones.
As more and more computer technology is crowbarred into our vehicles, more information is now available to independent garages that was previously only at the manufacturers fingertips. The price of labour is also dropping, which helps the average motorist no ends.
The managing director of Warranty Direct, Duncan McClure Fisher, has commented that independent garages are turning out to be the best bet for your servicing, as franchised dealers are still clinging onto their old prices, with some charging their clients over £200 per hour for work. This is about £50 more than a decade ago.
The Society of Motor Manufacturers and Traders (SMMT) has also commented that the abundance of competition is producing a competitive market, and that garages are also starting to offer MoTs at the same time as servicing, which can turn out to be a great time saver.
