I know the Mercedes is more refined and better built, and can also be bought with less money, but is it better on the street?

When it comes to the daily drive, I would say that they're both pretty much the same. In terms of performance, it's certainly better with a BMW, but that doesn't necessarily translate to better reliability or easier maintenance. With any vehicle, it's not so much the vehicle as it is the people who own it, the maintenance that it requires, and other factors which determine a vehicle's perceived ease of use. For example, I know that many people who drive German vehicles prefer not to have air conditioning. Not that they don't need it, but rather, that they prefer the air conditioning to work on a more regular basis, so they don't feel the need to run it as much. Same goes for other things like oil changes, brake fluid changes, etc. It's just a matter of preference, and ultimately, that's what makes the difference. My impression is that the Mercedes is better built, but if you didn't have the money for a luxury car, the BMW would probably be your choice.

There are many variables such as fuel mileage, maintenance costs, driver attitudes, driving conditions, and so on, but in general the BMW should last you longer than the Mercedes. If you already have a MB (or the like) and are considering a M6, then that's a different story. But most of us start out with either a 3 series or a 4 series and then decide on a higher priced car later.

That's all well and good, but for the majority of us, I'm sure I speak for the majority here on WSP, this is where I want to be. I understand there are other cars out there, but for us, these two brands are our bread and butter, they're what we've driven for most of our lives, and for whatever reason, I'm sticking with them.

What have the A-class had in terms of performance and reliability compared with the E300. Was the A-class faster? The A class was slower, a bit less power and a bit more fun to drive. The main difference was a much better handling car, the E300 handled like a tractor. The B-class is much more fun and the performance and reliability also much better.

In short the A-class was good when it was new but not so good when it was tired and the E300 was great when new but as you wore out it became a nightmare. I believe the newer version of the Mercedes is much more reliable than the older one. In addition to that - the older version was heavier. The Mercedes engineers decided to make a lighter car then they thought would become better handling. The result was a big hit for the old version that was still much better handling than all other cars back then.

The B-class however was built for pure speed while the A-class was built for more relaxed motoring, it's kind of a trade off between sportiness vs. Quietness.

In the end the Mercedes did an amazing job - I've driven E300s from 1980 until the mid '90s and I love driving them now. But I will always prefer the B-class.

I had the top version (BMW 740li twin turbo) in the 1990s, while the C180 A2 was being brought out. BMW was trying to compete with A-Class - it was a very luxurious car.

At the time there were also C300, A300 and C180. I don't know much about them but the C180 had a better handling and the best ride quality.
