UK new car sales 'on the rise'
The Society of Motor Manufacturers and Traders' (SMMT) monthly report disclosed that in November, 149,191 new cars were sold in the UK, an increase of 11.3% over the same period of 2011. Ford remains the best-selling brand, with it's Focus and Fiesta taking the top two spots, with the Vauxhall Corsa taking the third spot, albeit lagging behind the Fiesta by over 1,300 unit sales.
This massive increase means that currently, the number of new cars sold in the UK has risen to 1,921,052, which is an increase of 5.4% in the market over the January-November period of 2012. As a consequence, the UK is now the second biggest new vehicle marketplace in the EU, just behind Germany, but now ahead of France. The SMMT has said that it expects it's former sales forecast of 2.013 million cars to be surpassed based on these positive increases, and that the UK is well on the way to have it's best end of year figures since 2008.
The chief executive of the SMMT, Paul Everitt, commented: "The upward trend has been driven by private retail customers... The outlook for 2013 remains challenging, but vehicle manufacturers and their dealers will continue to work hard to attract motorists to their showrooms and deliver outstanding value."
